New Label Seeks Talent

Hi all,

Underbelly Music is a brand new digital label launching this summer, dealing in Tech House, Progressive, Techno (the deeper stuff, not Schranz or hard techno) and Electro mainly, but we're open to quality music in any genre.

Our aim is to release top notch music to the masses, and get it into the hands of the big players on the DJ circuit. Our website http://www.underbellymusic.com is set to go live in the coming weeks and we're now active looking for the following:

Producers
Our release roster is still to be decided, and we're looking for any artists who are interested in putting stuff out with us. Please send links to your music (uploaded to rapidshare, yousendit or your own personal webspace only please) to [email protected][/email]

Please note we will not accept any demos sent via links to myspace profiles, and any files sent as attachments will be deleted straight away as they will clog up our inbox

Our music policy is outlined above, so while we are focussing on the styles mentioned, we will listen to anything else, but remember the label isnt called Underbelly for nothing, so please dont send anything hugely commercial.

Remixers
As with producers, we are looking for talented remixers who can put their own spin on our tracks for final release packages. The same guidelines apply as above regarding sending demos.

DJs
If you play out regularly, have a residency, or have a regular radio show and are interested in being put on our limited promo mailing list, please send us a mail at [email protected] outlining the information of your gigs/shows such as average attendances/listener base/guest DJs etc and if we think it is mutually benificial to have you on the list, you'll be privvy to the latest promos as soon as theyre available, free of charge, in exchange for feedback and dancefloor reactions on every track.

Anyone who thinks they have some ideas
If you have any ideas you want to pitch to us about anything at all regarding the label, distribution, promos, artwork, design etc, please feel free to get in touch with us at [email protected] and let us know. You might well become a valuable addition to the Underbelly Music team. We're especially interested in people who are fluent in non-English languages.

Thanks for reading, and we hope to hear from you soon
Regards,
Underbelly Music

General rule of thumb: Don't initiate marketing efforts until marketing support and collateral - like a website - is up and running. It's like running an add with an 800 number that will be up and running in a couple days. Being that your primary role will be marketing, your artists will count on you to know things like that.

It also helps if you can show people some of the songs or artists you have signed so far, so we know if they are quality or not.

At the moment, I see you as just another idiot, living in his mums house, trying to run another gay e-label out of his bedroom. Not really the kind of business I would like to be signed to, personally.

Yes, it seems there are about a billion "we'll only release the best of the best" digital labels out there.

If you're truly committed to getting "the best of the best", how about offering advances for tracks? If artists know they're going to make money, whether or not you have the marketing know-how to get your label noticed among the billion labels, they'll definitely sit up and take notice. Put some upfront money on the table and you shouldn't have any problems attracting quality demos.

Or some up with some other compelling, unique reason artists should pay attention to you. Otherwise, good luck - you're going to need it!

(the overall negative tone of our responses is unfortunate, but a lot of us have seen this many times before...maybe we could all learn to ignore posts like this one...)

Wish more labels would specify certain standard contract terms.

One of my bosses works in IP and she showed me an absolutely EPIC contract from a digital label which you would be bloody insane to sign no matter how much awesome was on the label.

I mean it forbid any of the band members from acting as session musicians so they couldn't even play guitar for a buddy and help them get a release. Fuck that shit.

Yeah I've seen some downright horrid contracts in my time. But that's not confined to digital labels. at all.
