Question Complete DJ n00b question

Very basic, but is this DJing:

Pioneer CDJs hooked up to a laptop running Traktor and you're playing MP3s, mixing obviously using the crossfader on the CDJ. I mean, if there are no CDs or vinyls being used, is this real DJing?

Dont get hung up on the terminology. A 'REAL DJ' is just someone who plays songs for folks. The amount of knobs you have to turn has nothing to do with whether or not you are a 'real' dj.

**EDIT - and you do mean mixer instead of cdj right?

OK, a basic DJ setup will be something like this:

2 x CDJs or turntables
1 x Mixer (this has the cross fader)

- The CDJs/1200s are hooked up to the mixer. The mixer is hooked into the speakers/sound system. You use the cross fader (left-right) or the channel faders (up-down) to control which CDJ/1200 is being sent to the speakers.

- A laptop is usually a replacement for one or more of these components. In your case you are using a laptop with Tractor to send tunes to the mixer. Your CDJs are being used as controllers for the software.

- Is playing MP3s considered DJing? Sure! If you are playing songs for a group, and you are choosing the songs and the order of play (ie not playing someone else's mix!), then you're a DJ.

Congratulations, you are 0.18 of a 'real' DJ!

In all seriousness, while picking track order is the basic qualifier as being a DJ, I still think that the spirit of DJing includes a creative element in there as well.

While the creative element may make them more enjoyable to listen to, it still has nothing to do with being a 'real' dj. All you need to do is play songs...
