yeah just practice. it's like i mentioned in a prior thread. through constant practice you just know what your records sound like and you know which records go well together cuz you've practiced mixing them before. now when you're in a gig you have an idea of the mood you wanna start with so you drop those plates and see how the crowd reacts. if they like it then go with the theme and you don't have to worry about a preplanned set cuz through the hours of practice you will just know which record to put on next. if they don't like it then you'll know which records to use to tranistion to different genres and go from there. i know cuz i hadn't practiced in two months and i had to play two house parties that i completely bombed recently. then i had a gig on mother's day so i finally got around to practicing the week beforehand and that gig was significantly better. so a long winded answer to say practice. cheers and keep up the good work. it'll get better as it goes but it does get frustrating at times.
