im looking for a singer but i have no idea how to write lyrics or notes so im abit stuck.

you can write notes in your sequencer, just compose a melody line in the piano roll like you normally would then export it to midi. I'm pretty sure there are programs that can convert your midi file to a note sheet... like this: http://www.skytopia.com/project/articles/notation.html

Actually I prefer the remix approach, its easier to begin with in my opinion... a singer records a vocal track and you try to build a complete track around it... I am working on a Darkwave project right now and its my first collab with a singer ever. He sent me the vocals and told me "make a cool track with them".. What I'm doing now is pretty much I'm building a track underneath his vocal line.
The next track we make will be the other way round, and I'm not sure how well that will go.

Writing good lyrics is pretty much a skill on its own. You got to be talented with language... A lot of electronic music producers (including me) might know how to get their instrumental stuff done but fail at writing decent lyrics
So for starters who feel unsure about the whole thing.. I would suggest you collaborate with a singer who can come up with his own lyrics and melodies, this might make things easier.

yeah that would be better if the vocalist came up with some smart lyrics and some lines on some chords then i could def make a track out of that. but i could never write anything.

In my expierience with vocals its best to have them writen and arranged and know pretty much wat you want. Hard to expect a vocalist to come in a and write stuff for you. If your going to be producing the vocals you really need to know exactly wat you want. Also most singers will need some direction and wont just magically sing some perfect stuff for you. Your the producer not them.
As far as your friend wanting to sing on EDM just go find a producer and talk to them. Then go record some vox its not very hard.
And one more thing the vocals production doesnt have to be perfect Beyonce quality to start with.

Hey BDP - does your friend write lyrics? Also, is she good at coming up with melodies? Does she write complete songs? These are important considerations when working with a producer.

For example, I work with several female singers/songwriters and they range from complete songwriters who bring in their own ideas ready to be recorded to other girls who just sing and write lyrics for melodies that I provide. For the two girls that I work with most often, I usually give them the song idea and I include the general idea for the melody (usually as a piano melody). Then, they take the song and write lyrics to that melody. This is important to me because I do not write lyrics at all - I leave that entirely up to them. They are free to keep the melody or change it as needed to fit their lyrics. Then, we record the vox and finish off the song. Other times, I'll just give one of the singers a general idea for a song (without a melody) and she comes up with her own melody. These different approaches work well for us, because each singer/songwriter has different strengths, so we find an approach that works for each one. The point is, your friend really needs to find someone that can work with her given skill set.

One last point that may be worth mentioning is that your friend should really narrow down the style of music that she wants to sing. In my experience, formally trained opera singers' voices often don't work very well for trance, house, etc., but tend to work very nicely for more downtempo/chill/ambient stuff. This is just a broad generalization, but it's worthy of consideration. HTH.

But yes, she needs to be able to write ideally, relying on producers to write for you is usually not a good idea unless they're experienced with this stuff. Whether she writes something and then sends them a vocal, or they write something and send it to her to track vocals on top of it is up to her.
Also, has she considered how she's actually recording her vocals? Because she'll need some production knowledge of her own if she's going to do it herself.

I've found it super hard to write lyrics... I'm just not talented at writing words. So the one time I collaborated with a friend she just gave me a file with the Vox from a song she wrote then I took it and made some music around it. but I asked her if she would sing a couple of the parts a little different then the orginal then WHAM! I had a song.

If your friend has a file with some Vocals on it, I would love to make a song.

about half a year ago, I posted up this thread asking about Trance/House/EDM Producers and if they were looking for female vocals. I had a friend who was really interested, but after I found her a lead or two, she totally bailed on the idea.

Well I have another female vocal singer who is very interested in getting into the electronic side of things. It is actually my aunt.

she has a good voice mate, if there were some of her lyrics going around i'd have a crack for fun... not really in the position to pay for, or organise vocal recordings though sadly...
