Yeah program change is in the MIDI file.

Easy way to get around this is to copy the MIDI notes in the file to a blank one.

Does Ableton have a midi event/list editor? Use it to find and delete the program change events.

Yes, the program change automation can be very hard to find. As subtle said, just create a blank, clean MIDI event of the desired length, and just copy and paste the note information across into the new, clean one.

I should really read the manual more thoroughly, but does anyone know in Cubase 4, how to display all tracks that have automation, to be able to find and delete program changes quickly?

For Ableton? Down at the bottom when you select the midi in the Notes section there are events (Bank, Sub-Bank, Program). Make sure all 3 are set to 'none'. Problem solved.

Cubase it a bit more tricky but can also be done. I can't remember exactly how to do it but it's a bit of a pain compared to Ableton as it lists all the event changes and you have to delete each one manually.

Rightclick on a channel -> show/hide all used automation

Its a pity in Live that you can't program change midway through the clip, I think program change is maybe something that could be used to save CPU and RAM... like if you have a lot of incidental sound coming out of the one synth, you could set it up via program change so you don't run multiple instances... Easier than Bouncing!

thanks for that Theran - so that's for the automation inside a MIDI clip, all the automation tracks? That is, not the automation for a Cubase channel?

In the Cubase sequencer windows, you have miditracks, audiotrack etc, lined-up on the left side of the sequencer. Off the top of my head, if you rightclick on some empty space (just below the channel i.e.), you can select the show/hide all automation function. You can, once again from the top of my head, select the vst folder (where you can set all automation for your plugins) and rightclick and do the same.

When I'm back in the studio, I will look this up for you, but I think the above mentioned is the way to go. If it isn't, it's something in that direction. It is possible though.

Edit: I work in Cubase 3 though, but I think it's still the same in 4

I'll try it out tonight. I know how to open up all the Cubase automation lanes, whether they be for VST instruments or audio tracks. I'm interested in the automation lanes contained inside MIDI clips. Maybe if I select a MIDI channel and do the "show all" it will display this info, though I'm inclined to think it would show all the Cubase automation for the MIDI processors on that channel (for example, if I have an arpeggiator running and automate a parameter), rather than the MIDI automation inside the MIDI clip. I'll give it a go tonight, I'm hoping it's possible, though it's not a big issue.
