The islands that are in the shape of the World are a nice touch!! The prince that spearheaded the effort wanted to ensure Dubai's olong term economic stability, and he has forseen that his oil based city needs a new basis for economic sustainability. That will come in the form of tourism.

Dubai is a very nice to place to visit for up to a week. Lots of fun stuff to do for tourists. I wouldn't want to live there though.
