DF and JK were the games that really got me into gaming. They were the first where I played multiplayer extensively, and did so well into the 2000s. I was a part of the modding community back in the day. What they fail to mention here is that alot of the JK fans were really dissapointed at Jedi Outcast (myself included). It had a great engine (Q3) and alot of potential, but it seems like the gameplay was really really slowed down (especially multiplayer gameplay), and the singleplayer was ruined by some of the cheesiest dialogue and storyline in gaming history. JA was often seen as the "fixing" of JO, and while the SP storyline was still pretty lame, the fast pace of the multiplayer was more appealing to the JK fans. JK is still my favorite in the series, but JA was also pretty good (despite the cringeworthy moments, the gameplay made up for it). It should also be mentioned that before JO was even announced to the public, the console game Obi Wan was to be considered the spiritual successor to Jedi Knight.
Now I really wish they'd make a proper addition to the series using the UT3 engine or something similar.
