Too Much Techno, Tech House and Minimal?

I've only been back in the city for a month, but it is my observation that there is an overabundance of techno* (and other sub genres) in Toronto. As you all know, I love techno. Many/most of my favourite DJs are techno DJs. However, I think the genre is being bastardized to the point where I'm getting sick of hearing it. It seems everyone and their brother is the latest techno wizard, with the "sickest techno tracks" that no one else has.

I also found this was actually the same all over Europe. 95% of all the events I've been to in the past year in Europe have been techno nights. Now, being back in Toronto, I realize the same thing is happening here. The problem is that there seems to be a bit of a lack of quality parties featuring DJs who play other genres.

Techno is a great genre, but it is very austere, dark, and takes itself way too seriously some times.

Discuss.

*I will call the current popular sound in Toronto "techno" for ease of discussion on this board. One of my actual pet peeves recently is the new buzz word for this popular sound being "techno" instead of "minimal". Most times, tracks are incorrectly called either one of these genres, when really what is usually being described is tech house.

It depends on whatever scene you're into. Your interest in it makes you ignore the others.

I'd say House is the reigning scene tho. I think Trance is dying here, but as I said, I don't follow it enough now to know for sure.

Edit: So you're talking about Minimal? Then I sorta agree.

Edit #2: Did you edit the title to have the other genres? Am I going fuckin crazy?

While I do agree that it's definately being overplayed, it hasn't been excessive enough to annoy me. I find that this is the case with a lot of the locals... Too many Toronto deejays have become too cookie cutter. There's a huge difference in quality when actual techno deejays come and play here though (We're lucky to get this much international techno talent! Prior years have been lacking.) Gregor Tresher is a great example of this. To avoid getting sick of it, I've been filtering through my list of Summer parties so that I ensure I get variety. They're there...you just have to look harder.

Not enough REAL (hard) techno AFAIC. Not much at all.

Now there's lots being called techno... when its tech-house or minimal.

THANK YOU for making the distinction and straightening out that its indeed these two genres that there's "too much" of (well, that's what im reading into your stmt... im curious if you actually feel there too much techno -- proper techno, hard techno!)

in my opinion things like this always happen. before this it was the electro house fad. something gets popular and everyone plays it. just wait it out and something else will be the new fad. im just glad that i am very eclectic these days and try to find whatever i like out of any genre

I love techno and I remember saying years ago that techno would be the next big thing in Toronto....however I agree that its being overdone....its seems almost all DJs are incorporating more and more techno in their sets.

Makes me wonder if the DJs are just playing it because its the in thing to do or if they actually enjoy it.

To be honest, it's at a point now where I don't even like most of what is called "techno" or "minimal" anymore unless it's really creative or cutting edge, or if the DJ plays proper techno and is amazing technically (ie Richie Hawtin or Jeff Mills). It's just waaaaaay too played out these days.

It seems all you need these days is distorted bass and 2 bottles clinking together to be the next cool guy who plays tech/minimal/techno/tech house.
