Okay then, something's definitely messing with the explorer.exe task.
I would boot into Safe Mode (after the initial POST/memory test when you power on, start tapping F8 until you see a menu which lets you select "Safe Mode"). Once booted into Safe Mode, go to Start > Run, and type "msconfig". This will bring up a window which you can use to disable startup items. You want to go to the "Startup" tab after selecting "Selective Startup Mode".


I would look through there and disable anything that you feel isn't necessary. A lot of times, programs will put "updaters" that run in the background constantly, for instance. If you expand the "Command" column a bit, you should be able to see what each item is pointing to. Nothing that you turn off in here should permanently disable your system, and if you lose some functionality, you can always turn it back on.
If you are super paranoid, however, you could try looking them up here, but meh.
Reboot.
When you log back in, it will warn you that it's running in "Selective Startup Mode". Just tell it to not remind you anymore and you should be set.
