McCain's VP pick

So while I'm pleased to see a woman in the race again, I think this is a really poor choice by McCain. Given his age, the consideration of whether the VP could step in immediately has got to be an even bigger consideration than it would normally be. I just don't think she's equipped for the presidency.

Sarah Palin: McCain's VP choice
LIZ SIDOTI AND BETH FOUHY

Associated Press

August 29, 2008 at 12:22 PM EDT

John McCain picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a conservative who shares his maverick streak, as his vice presidential running mate on Friday in a startling selection on the eve of the Republican National Convention.

At a raucous rally in the swing state of Ohio, Mr. McCain said he made his pick after looking for a political partner "who can best help me shake up Washington and make it start working again for the people who are counting on us."

Mr. McCain said that Ms. Palin was "exactly who I need. She's exactly who this country needs to help us fight the same old Washington politics of me first and country second."

Ms. Palin, whose name wasn't on the short list of prospects so heavily discussed publicly in recent weeks, thus became the first woman named to a spot on a Republican ticket. "I am honoured," she said as she stood by a beaming Mr. McCain in her first few seconds in the national spotlight.

Sources say Republican presidential nominee-to-be John McCain has named Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate, picking the state's youngest governor and its first female top executive.

In a fast-developing presidential campaign, Mr. McCain made his selection six days after his Democratic rival Barack Obama, named Sen. Joseph Biden of delaware, as his running mate.

The contrast between the two announcements was remarkable — Mr. Obama picked an older running mate, and a man whom he said at the outset was qualified to be president.

Mr. McCain chose Ms. Palin, a generation younger than he is, and a governor less than two years, and made no such claim about her readiness to sit in the Oval Office.

Unlike Mr. Biden, who attacked Mr. McCain sharply in his debut last week, Ms. Palin was indirect in her initial attemps to elevate Mr. McCain over Mr. Obama.

"There is only one candidate who has truly fought for America and that man is John McCain," she said as Mr. McCain beamed. The Arizona senator was a prisoner of war for more than five years in Vietnam.

Ms. Palin made an immediate play for support from Democratic women, mentioning that she followed in the footsteps of Geraldine Ferraro, who was the Democratic vice presidential running mate in 1984.

She also referred favorably to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, who drew 18 million votes in her unsuccessful run against Mr. Obama for the Democratic nomination.

Probably? More like obviously. He's attacked Obama's lack of experience in office, and then goes and picks a first-termer as his VP.

Makes sense to me.

There is nothing he can really do.....

He should've at least gotten a mexican chica or something to get the Latino votes...

Yes, he really should have picked a veteran like Biden instead.

Actually, the running joke was that Obama was going to do that as protection against assassination. Any klanners thinking of knocking him off would then have to contend with a Mexican president.

Not like it matters now, since he isn't going to win.

Haha jesus. Thankfully the people who go for that stuff are the people who don't bother showing up to vote.

All his speeches sound the same. "Hope" or "change" every 3rd word. He's wonderful at saying a whole lot of nothing and saying it passionately. I promise hope, change, hope in change, and change based on the hopes of those hoping for change. I foresee changes in the hopes of the hopeful who don't often change their hopes for change. I stand for continued hope in these changes. And eating babies. But mostly hope.

McCain is, quite frankly, a RINO, which is why he decided to go for a woman with such little experience as a running mate. Still, he'd be a great leader because he's principled and (somewhat) conservative but doesn't have the cowboy image that Bush does, no matter how many times rags like the AP throw out bullshit words like "maverick".

Obama killed any chances he might have had by joining up with Biden. McCain made an... iffy choice, but not a completely ridiculous one. VPs aren't necessarily expected to have that much experience (Dan Quayle anyone?).

I would hope that they win. But even though Obama is the favourite to win right now by a few percent. Lets just remember a group of people his campaign is aiming at. Younger Americans.

When was the last time you voted? Not too sure about you, but when it was time to vote for our MPPs a couple years ago, most of my friends forgot or got too lazy and didn't wanna go to a voting center. When November 4th comes I bet a lot of those teenagers, and adults age 20-30 will forget or just won't cast a vote.
