going east in the morning isn't that bad just leave early on the first day so you can gauge your time, but 10 minutes can make a huge different in traffic in the morning. once you pass downtown it shouldn't be that crowded though. if you need to be at work by 8 am id say try leaving at at like 645 or so.

Well if I had to be at work in Sylmar by 7am, I think I could leave my place in Santa Monica at 6:25am or so? I don't think the traffic could be that bad so early, could it?

ah at 7am, yea traffic shouldn't be that bad if you leave at like 620-625. i think traffic usually starts up around like 720-730
