I was thinking about it this morning, and Jamie's comment on fake boobs convinced me this is definitely COR material. Well, the question is: what can be flattering about yourself?

If someone compliments you on something you cannot change, can you really be flattered by that comment? Why, or why not?
Personally, I don't think so. Although it is nice not to be seen as a hideous monster, there's little merit in being beautiful, it seems. You can try to look better, but you almost always need to rely on your body - if you can burn fat easily, it's not hard to have a nice stomach, for example. And, if you're religious, it makes even less sense: if you're your soul (rather than your body), can you be flattered by any comments on your body? It's not really yours, so to speak, and can't even lend it if you want: you can do someone else a favour (which is like "lending your body" in a way) or you can let your body be used by someone else (which is yet another way of "lending your body", albeit a non-Christian one). But only you know what it feels like to raise your arm.
Thoughts?

if i buy a pair of jeans and they look good on me, is it a problem if i receive a compliment?
I agree. Seems more reasonable to have pride in what you've done rather than in what you are by birth.
Of course, what you are by birth determines to some extent what you can do in life, and it can take work to maintain the good things that you have by birth, so it gets tricky.

You can't fix boobs, you can just patch them up, and very obviousely so.

I'll take any compliment I can get, plain and simple. They're just good for the ego/soul.
Now, do I actually believe 90% of them? Hell no.

makes me think of when people get all excited about their birthdays. When it's my birthday and people are like "congratulations!" "Happy Birthday!".... I think to myself, why do people congratulate others on the day they were born, as if they had any say in the matter? It's not really an accomplishment or anything.

The "congratulations" is about having lived another year, not about having been born on a specific date.
Not that simply staying alive is a huge accomplishment for a young person in a modern society, but whatever.

True. It is, however, a good time to congratulate the old man on having gotten laid at some point.
