I disagree. This is only true if you have no creativity. I stand by my often-made claim (as does my collaborating buddy) that no one has or ever will recognize a Nexus preset that we've tweaked using Nexus' built-in parameters (e.g., layers, filter, FX, LFOs, envelopes, arp) and used in one of my/our songs. You have even more possibilities using external plugins.
That said, yes I agree with your and other people's recommendations that if you want real flexibility and the ability to create those leads from scratch, the NI synths (esp. Massive) will do it easily. Go to NI's website and check out the Massive video tutorial for starters. Another suggestion is that you could buy/download a commercial or freebie set of patches for one of the NI synths (e.g., Vengeance Electro for Massive) and study the patches to see how they were programmed. KVR has a lot of user-contributed patch banks that may be useful (and free) as well.

i would stick to using the NI synths. You can do so much more than what you can with nexus. Nexus sounds very cheap in my opinion. All of the patches are completely covered in reverb and delay to try and cover up the poor sound quality. It sounds like they have only sampled 3 notes per octave. Its good for quickly jotting down ideas but i always turn to my other synths when its time to record.
