Thumbs up Colin Powell Endorses Obama

quote:
Former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell endorsed the presidential bid of Senator Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee, during an interview Sunday on “Meet the Press.”

The former Army general, who served as Secretary of State during President George W. Bush’s first term said a number of factors contributed to his decision to support Mr. Obama over Senator John McCain, the Republican nominee.

“I think that Senator Obama brings a fresh set of eyes, fresh set of ideas to the table,” Mr. Powell said, speaking outside NBC’s Washington studio. “I think that Senator McCain, as gifted as he is, is essentially going to execute the Republican agenda, the orthodoxy of the Republican agenda with a new face and a maverick approach to it, and he’d be quite good at it, but i think we need more than that.”

Mr. Powell also said following the “Meet the Press” interview that the negativity of the McCain campaign was “over the top” and troubled him.

In similar news, the Obama campaign just announced that they raised over $150,000,000 in September, with average donations of less than $100, bringing their total number of unique donors to 3,000,000.

quote:
Obama campaign manager David Plouffe emails supporters this morning with the news that Obama has raised an extraordinary sum in September: Over $150 million.

The Obama camp added 632,000 new donors, bringing the campaign's total number of donors to over $3 million. Also extraordinary: The average donation for the month was less than $100.

The key here is that September was when the contours of the current context first became truly visible: The GOP convention took place at the start of the month, and hockey mom/pitbull with lipstick Sarah Palin was first introduced to America as John McCain's choice for backup commander in chief.

What's more, as the month unfolded, it became clearer and clearer that McCain had made a strategic decision to wage a campaign dominated by slimy attacks, vile adver-sleazements, and cosmic levels of mendacity. And Obama's donor base responded in kind, as did more than half a million newcomers.

http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpo...150_million.php

So the headlines on the news today are:
1. Colin Powell, a vaunted Republican military and diplomatic expert, endorses Obama.
2. Obama has now raised the most money from the most contributors of all-time.
3. McCain's campaign is only interested in getting the votes of "Pro-America" places like "Real Virginia" and wants an investigation of those "anti-American liberals" in Congress.

What a bad morning for the McCain team.

The Powell Endorsement: Hurts McCain; Helps Obama
In that order, I think.

(1) It deprives McCain of a day to win the news cycle. There are sixteen left.

(2) Powell is a "man who I admire as much as anyone in the world," McCain has said. He was an informal adviser to the campaign early on. And the content of the endorsement acknowledges what McCain's accomplished, studies it, and judges that it is insufficient for the modern world. (Powell is closer to McCain than Obama on Iraq.) McCain would be a maverick, Powell says, but America needs a transformation figure.

(3) McCain might take this as a personal rejection, and he might wear it on his sleeve.

(4) Powell is a culturally individuated African American hero; to the extent that there remain white voters who have inchoate worries about Obama's race, it helps to have him associated with a man whose race they've already gotten over. I do think this cohort of people is tiny.

Maybe Bush will manage to be the first US president to split his party in two. I suppose that could be a logical climax of his presidency.

Btw, Renegade, nice to see you back here too

That wasn't just an endorsement, he just single handedly destroyed McCain's campaign and gave Obama the election. WOW.

You're acting like it was close before the endorsement.

Well no but that certainly sealed the deal. I was just expecting him to endorse Obama and that's all he really needed to do. But he choose to completely annihilate McCain point by point. This guy was apart of Bush's cabinet, how are republicans going to come back from this? They can't.

This was nearly as good, if not better than his appearance on MTP. For Bachmann to be bringing back the spirit of McCarthyism like this is nothing shy of fucking unbelievable.

And desperate, IMO.

She's also a lying piece of shit, and she needs to go:

Get these stupid fucking Republicans out of office now. Her opponent is El Tinklenberg, and if you're interested in helping to rid us of this disgusting bitch, you can do so here:

Since she appeared on hardball, Tinklenberg has raised half a million dollars in 24 hours.
