Don't book a hotel you've never stayed in. Do book hotels that friends have stayed in. There is a huge unbelievable difference between a $200 a night hotel and a $300 night hotel, don't find out the hard way. And don't believe the reviews on travel sites. There's some sort of moratorium put in place by the south beach art deco historical society that some hotels cannot be rehabilitated, and they are total roach motels. It's definitely worth every penny to stay at a nicer more expensive hotel. Always call the hotel and ask what kind of air conditioning systems they have in the room. If its a window unit, dont stay there. trust me on that.
Dont split a room with more than one person...you'll kill each other. You also don't want to club around in big groups because usually its hard to get everyone in together.
Every year when I get there I always go to the walgreens near Collins and 17th with a huge backpack and stock up on things like food, water, tylenol, alcohol, etc. You can save a shitload of money this way...and pregaming is a fine art that should be learned by all. Drinks in Miami are $20 in some places.
Don't plan anything and don't buy tickets unless you absolutely know you will never forgive yourself for not attending that event or seeing that dj. Every year I sit down and plan what im going to go to every day, I end up going to maybe 1 thing I originally planned. Some of the best parties are the free ones or the ones you just happen to walk past. Steer clear of mega clubs unless you have tickets and plan to show up early or buy a table...you could end up standing outside in a vanity line for hours otherwise.
Pace yourself and don't overdo it your first day or your second day will be totally ruined. If you are puking by 9pm the first night, you've gone too far.
Don't get drunk and fall asleep on the beach, sunburn happens.
The restaurants on Ocean drive are awesome and I recommend trying as many of them as you can, especially the ones that have drink specials.
Split cabs to downtown and back.
Stay twice as long as you originally planned, every other day will probably be a recovery day.
Doormen can be paid off.
