Read This! Geek Speek - random TECH talking on TA

Thought it might be useful to have a similar to "random talking" but for us geeks.

I'll start off with my first impressions with Windows 7. I just jumped on a Windows 7 beta bandwagon. For all the crap and beating that Vista took Windows 7 looks like a pretty significant improvement. Now, the interface is still the same - so, for better or worse - get used to it.

Overall "out of the box experience" is somewhat better in some aspects and kinda "wtf" in others. Case in point: you cannot change start menu to "classic" and have to use the dynamic menu system (which I have loathed since XP days). Digging up "Computer" and "Network" icons (which are missing) also took some effort. Windows update is also forcing you to use shell window as opposed to browser window in the past. Windows update itself has been changed too.

Performance-wise, I have 2 identical systems and side by side, the performance appears to be noticeably better running on the same hardware with Windows 7, compared to Vista. Now, that does not mean that "minimum" requiremens have changed nor would you see a significantly better performance on crappy hardware. However, you will get a more responsive UI on Win7. There are also some UI changes that may make even Vista veterans dig around for a bit - for example "quick access" toolbar is missing and I haven't been able to find it yet. But show desktop button is right next to the clock - which is convenient (sorta). I also like that you can change your desktop background based on a collection which may contain several different (and quite awesome) background images. Just right-click on the desktop, chose "next desktop background picture" and off you go. Some pics are just stunning in color and crispness.

Installation on Thinkpad went very smoothly

Some gripes:

Considering it's one of the first Betas, the overall experience so far is positive. But IE 8 is COMPLETE AND UTTER SHIT, just as always. Even "porn" mode can't save it from being so shitty.

Hybernation mode still has to be turned off from command line

UAC is still turned on but somewhat more intelligent than it was on vista.

COOLNESS POINT:
The screen dims gradually if left inactive and resumes full brightness when you move a mouse cursor. yes, I am easily impressed but I thought it is rather neat. Plus I think will do a great deal for power management.

Thanks for the review, as long as the UI feels snapper im happy.
I'm sick of how sluggish vista feels.

Although that is a pretty neat feature isn't that something macs have always done?

Isn't that really annoying when watching movies?

Just use Google Chrome! (although you have to do some simple hax0ring to get it to work properly)

My only gripe at the moment is that the sound doesn't work for me. I wouldn't expect there to be drivers for my actual sound card (Auzentech) but Windows Updater actually installed drivers for my onboard Realtek AC97 sound and it still doesn't work

= fail.

I hate all the shiny crap and fancy window animations that just slow down the computer. Give me utility and speed over looks any day...

for real. this is my main reason for not wanting to get a new computer/laptop w/ vista...because that's the impression i'm under is that its "too fancy" for its own good....just a lot of shit that makes the system slower, and is not necessary.

Just upgrade to XP 64bit and you shouldn't have to upgrade anything for a long time. 32 bit operating systems won't recognize anything more than 3.25 gigs of RAM (I'm running Vista 32bit and it only recognizes 3.25 of my 4, and XP 32bit only recognized 3 of my 4). The only thing that might change after a while is XP being able to work with many multi-core processors.

Eventually you'll have to switch to the fanciness, but you should be alright in the meantime.

need a good Bluetooth Stereo (AD2P) headset for my crackberry. Anyone have any recommendations? prefer something that wraps around my ears so I can use it while running in the park and is light weight and comfy enough. Anyone with first hand experience?
