I think you're right but there are inevitably common sounds within almost all deep house tracks. But like you said, percussion and vibe make it all happen. Acoustic sounds and organic stuff are essential though.
Ok but where do I start? LP, HP (guess not), BP, Notch? |
Depends on the sound, to make a deep sound you want to low pass filter the sound so that some of the highs are cut off and the sound starts to feel submerged. The mids and lows are accentuated while creating a constrast with the hi freqs that slightly bleeds in the background, creating that feeling of space and deepness. But your first step should be finding the right sounds to work with. The VST's I listed will be good place to start.
As far as chords, you can work with almost all chords because its really more about how you design the individual sounds and how you work your bassline around your kick/snare more than anything.
This thread makes me want to start a brighter Deep House track, been working on a Deep track the past few days. A real dark room workout. Something i'd want to hear afterhours or very late into the night, head down wondering if there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I might post up a version on the production forum before finishing it up, getting it mastered, and sending it out to labels.
