A production (mostly Trance) dictionary

So I think it would be a cool idea to have a dictionary related to Trance about all the different topics. Simple things like Oscillating, Reverb, Attack, Delay, etc. I know these answers can be found in manuals, but they can't be found as how they relate to Trance. I for one still am not very educated when it comes to Oscillators. I really think this would go over well. I'll compile the list at the end and we'll collectively decide which definitions are best and maybe we can get it posted as a sticky. (Don't talk about the effect on specific instruments, just the whole concept of the term)

A few terms to get us started: (I would give definitions, but I know there are many others who are able to provide a much more in-depth explanation). You guys add some more. Let's do this shiz.

Oscillation

Side Chaining

Reverb

Attack

Delay

Distortion

Compressors

Saturators (kinda self explanatory)

Low pass filter

High pass filter

Filters (in general)

Basic EQing (you may want to talk specific tracks and instruments here)

Dynamic Tube

Heh.

Side Chaining - Automation of the volume knob of the bass with the kick pattern.

Seriously, I think TA already has something like this.

Here it is: http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...7&forumid=48&s=

Nice idea! I'd enjoy writing some of the following entries...

Drum Machine, Synthesizer, Rompler, Sampler (for total n00bs, hehe)
Mixing
Mastering
Panning
Acoustic Treatment
Monitors / Monitoring
Modulation
Modulation Wheel
Ring Modulation
Sampling Rate
Audio File Compression (MP3 etc.)
Digital
Analog
Routing
LFO
Resonance (could go under "Filter")
Dynamic Range
Transients / Peaks (could go under "Dynamic Range")
Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release (ADSR)
Velocity
Waveform
Detuning
Envelope (Filter Envelope, Amp Envelope, Mod Envelope)
Octaves / Semitones / Cents (for people who don't know music)
Keys and Modes
Subtractive Synthesis
Additive Synthesis
Granular Synthesis
Physical Modeling Synthesis
Wavetable Synthesis
Frequency Modulation (FM) Synthesis
Bitcrushing / Sample Rate Reduction

I think we should keep definitions fairly short, even though you could write pages about each one. People tend to gloss over long definitions, but if you give short ones (with some pictures?), I think you could keep people interested.

Also, each definition could link to other relevant definitions and pages with more in-depth info.

That list is good, but I think it would also be cool to have a bunch of short definitions in one place for newbies.

I like the other tutorial, but I think having a "trance dictionary" would help.

Not to be picky, but I wouldn't put that down as a definition of side-chaining, although it could be used as an example.

How about something simple like..

Side-chaining - the use of an input signal level to modify another signal.

I think "dance dictionary" sounds better

I'll see what else I can come up with when I get back home.

Exactly - far too many people confuse "ducking" (one use of sidechaining) with the term "sidechaining". Even worse, a lot of people seem to think that it is only used for kick/bass. A dictionary would definitely help clear up that confusion.

What people started to refer to as ducking, I call automation I know side chaining isn't just kick/bass, I was just making a funny
