The basic MIDI sound

I have a midi file on my computer, I play the file using Windows Media Player and I hear the melody playing.

But there's one problem: how can I get this "windows midi sound" as a virtual instrument in Ableton without converting the midi onto audio. I still want to be able to edit further on.

I have looked on Google on things such as windows midi sound and stuff but I didn't find anything relevant like a VST.

Any hints?

Just open a midi file with windows media player or even better if you have Live, preview the midi file in Live's browser (that's the exact sound I'm looking for).

Yeah, I think he's looking for the cheesy sounds that play when you open a MIDI file in Windows.

No lol turns out the WMP sound isn't the one used in Live's browser.

I'd love to upload a sample but I can't record that in Live and Audacity doesn't record audio output from my external soundcard

If it sounds different between WMP and Live's preview, then they're using different general midi sound tables. So it's not the MS GS Wavetable SW Synth he's looking for, it's something particular to Live. If I'm understanding you right? Sounds kinda strange. I'd have thought that Live would have their sound set as selectable if they went through the process of making one that's audible in this preview mode or whatever(I don't know Live).

.... OR, it could be the audio interface/soundcard he's using. I remember back in the day when I used Creative Labs(!!?) sound cards(not for making music, mind you), the midi sounds were different between cards. Windows is gonna want to default to it's sound set as a standard, but if these sounds are held inside the soundcard, perhaps there's a way to set the default general midi sounds within the Windows control panel. A quick browse through my OS, Vista64, and I can't find any reference to where this setting is chosen. Not in Control Panel/Sounds... And not in the device manager... perhaps your sound card has its on settings control suite. Failing that, contact your soundcard/interface and ask em. They should know.
If this is the case.

But yeah, as far as i know, there's no standard midi wavetable. The closest you'll come is what most people have, which by now is Microsoft's.
