Snowboarding in the Rockies

9pm tonight, I'm outta here.

I'm flying to Calgary for a snowboarding trip.

Sunshine Village
Fernie
Lake Louise
Revelstoke
Sunshine Village

Woot. Fucking. Woot.

Anyone have any good stories from skiing/riding out West?

There is riding out west, and then there is riding out west.

Snow in the Rockies, at least Colorado/Utah/Montana/etc is dry and light powder outside the groomed runs. Nice stuff.

Further west in the Cascades/Coastal Ranges in the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia the snow is a much more wet and heavy. With the right wax it can be very fast snow.

California is a combination of both, the further south you go the more like the Rockies it will be.

I have snowboarded many times in the Cascades and have to say the heavy wet and fast snow will make you a better boarder/skier anywhere.

If you are coming from East Coast mountains and never been to the West get ready for actual mountains!

Mt Hood is awesome. I have boarded at Timberline in late March/April in just snowboard pants and a t-shirt and been comfy. Even below the lodge they will sometimes still have snow that late in the season, and up on the glacier you can ski year round when they dont have camps.

Growing up in Calgary I know these hills fairly good. The best snow you will get will be in Fernie. Last year when we went to Fernie to go snowmobiling, the snow was soooo high, you couldnt even see businesses on the main highway. Sunshine is a good hill when the weather cooperates. Standish Chair has the best runs IMO. Also if it is windy/flat light, try to stay away from going to the top of Goats Eye/the main mountain. Louise is a great hill. Tons of good tree lines on the front/larch mountains. The back bowls are great if you are a good skier/boarder.(make sure you go to the backside lodge for lunch and feed the birds right out of your hand. pretty cool) Ive never been skiing at Revelstoke but ive herd good things. Hope this helps and break a leg out there. JK
