Monitor placement

I finally got monitors and now i have everything i need to set them up as well.

The manual says:
"For both stereo and surround mixing
your position in relation to the main front
speakers — the “sweet spot” as it’s often
called — should be one apex of an
equilateral triangle. In other words your
distance from either speaker should be the
same as the distance between the two
speakers. The speakers should also be
“toed in” to the corresponding 60° angle
so that the drivers are aimed directly at the
listening position."

If I place them like that, they're gonna be really near to my laptop stand which is in the middle (behind the mixer). The distance the speakers are apart from each other would be about 678 mm. I think that's kinda little and would much rather move them further apart. I'm not gonna use these monitors for producing or anything like that, just mixing. So does it really matter much how I place them or should I just place them as I like (further apart, making the angle in the pic a lot bigger and the distance between the monitors bigger than the distance from my ear to either of the monitors)? I'm open to suggestions.

I think as long as they're facing you and are roughly at ear level, you'll be fine. Besides, unless you're playing exclusively at big clubs, you'll have to deal with crappy monitors/monitor placement/or total lack of when playing out.

I have no intentions of ever playing out at all, so it most likely will never happen, so it doesn't matter much. And I've done just fine without monitors so far. Thought about this more and I'm definitely gonna place them further apart (roughly 1225 mm apart and about 850 - 860 mm from my ears). I think I'll be able to hear something at least.

Start them at the recommended distance, and then try moving them around and see what sounds best. You probably wont notice much difference if they are that close together though.

it's always smarter to start with manufacturer's recommended specs and work from there

but then again, they built them, what would they know?

an equilateral triangle will always give you the best sound from your monitors, producing or djing aside
