marcel dettmann interview on ra

http://www.residentadvisor.net/feat...ad.aspx?id=1020

he really seems totally unspoiled and i think thats what we can hear in his music:

quote:
Since then, work and pleasure have been indistinguishable for Dettmann. Most weekdays, he wakes up around nine or ten, and gets to work on his tracks. "It's amazing, to sit there for ten hours just making strange music." Dettmann's creative process is interrupted only by his five hour shifts at Hard Wax, which occur three times per week. This can be difficult on Mondays, when he's short one night of sleep after a weekend at Berghain. Luckily, the staff there tends to be understanding—the shop is owned by Mark Ernestus of Basic Channel fame, and the staff includes, T++, DJ Pete (AKA Substance) and Equalized (AKA Shed). When his weekends aren't consumed by DJ gigs, Dettmann and his girlfriend go on double dates with Tobias and Cassy, or skiing with Ben Klock and co. And finally, once every month or so, Dettmann gets his clubbing fix. "Me and a bunch of guys get together and just go, for fifteen hours or so, we get totally lost." As a punter in the crowd, Dettmann's favorite spots include Harry Klein ("still very good... the sweat literally drips from ceiling") and Muna, a student favorite in Jena. But when he's manning the helm, there is no better club than Berghain, the club whose name has become inextricably linked with his own. "Berlin, Hard Wax, Berghain, my music. It's an amazing combination," he says. "It's the best thing that's ever happened to me."

Marcel Dettmann is living THE life that most techno DJs want to achieve at some point in their careers. Props to him for working his way to success.

Best quote IMO.

I need to make it to Germany. Doubt they'd let my American ass into Berghain anyway. Has anyone been there? Does it live up to the hype?

yes they have a strict door policy. but the doorman isnt unfair, he is just very good in sorting out the people who "pretend" i think. and yeah there are some unfavorable stories regarding tourists... on the other hand, it really isnt that hard to get in if you fit in, its only that sometimes the doorman knows better about this than you

IMO that is just as lame as these hip US clubs letting in VIPs while the rest of us sit out in the cold. Just more club politics. Maybe I'm missing something.

yeah because the guys at berghain dont prefer vips and the chic guys, they actually prefer those who belong to the scene

i guess you could argue it's politics. but basically, if you are there for the right reasons you'll probably get in. i didn't have any trouble.

re:dettmann quote

i have a love/hate relationship with smoking in clubs. I like the ambience on one hand, but it really fucks up my upper respiratory system , especially when you're partying in a basement or low ceiling warehouse or something.

I wish they'd bring back smoking in glasgow clubs. I don't smoke myself, but it sure beats the smell of dried in beer and sweat..
