Review: DJ Mag Pool Party @ Shelborne 03/25/2009
what a great fucking party! nothing mind blowing but defiantly a fucking kick ass way to start wmc!!!
got to the shelbourne 5 mins after 12 and had to pick up some tickets at the wanttickets store for a different event. took about 30 mins total so not too bad. then had waited about another 30 mins in the line for the dj mag pool party. when i got to the front the security guards had no idea what "will call" meant and tried to send me back inside the wanttickets store. i wasnt having any of it and finally a guy showed up with the will call list. somehow i wasnt on it. i have no idea how or why because ive NEVER had a problem with will call. luckily i had my printout and the guy didnt seem to care too much about finding my name and let me and my gf in. that coulda been a hell of a problem but thankfully it wasnt.
finally got in and josh gabriel was about to start. josh came on and 5 mins into his set he unplugged something and we had nothing but silence for 5 mins. kinda gay, but whatever it was early so no biggie. josh did however play a BANGING set. too bad not too many people were around to see it. gui boratto was on next and did decent. nothing terrible but it lacked some of the energy after gabriels banging start. next came way out west who i was really excited for but unfortunately their sound cut out atleast 5 different times and it was pretty weak. the best track they played was killa. dj dan came on next and i just totally skipped it. went way to the back and just sat down and had a beer. next was guetta who opened up BAAAANING but then quickly we realized why hes guetta... cheese bomb after cheese bomb after cheese bomb. now lemme go on a little rant here about this guy, cuz this kinda pisses me off...
a djs job is supposed to be to play music for the people to help them dance and have a good time. a dj is supposed to know how to read a crowd. guetta lacked this completely. he started out banging like i said and the crowd ate it up. it ate up like two cheese bombs in a row but towards the end of guettas set i barely even saw people moving anymore. he totally lost the crowd halfway into his set after he started playing cheese. why in the fuck did he not go back to what he was playing when he started?! like i said, it was banging. theres one track that i NEEEEEED the ID for. it was like his 3rd of 4th track. but yea, other than that, i understand why everyone hates guetta now a days.
now opposed to guetta, lawler was amazing. totally owned the shit. started a little slow and i thought we were doomed but within 10 mins brought shit to another fucking level! after lawler i stuck around for 30 mins of dubfire but was bored and hungry so we left. wanted to see zabi, so im curious on how he did but im sure he banged it.
overall... everything for $10... you cant fucking beat that shit!!! beer was expensive as fuck ($10) and it was super packed. also a lot of weird people once again. but its wmc so thats expected. its just dont any of these people know that you have to pace yourself? half of em wont be standing on friday let alone sunday. lol. at the end of the day i think i prefer the surfcomber to the shelbourne though when it comes to pool parties. surfcomber had a way better setup last year. but the music was def better today!!! waaaaaaaaaay too loud though... my ears are ringing atm. from a pool party? yep!
short version:
josh gabriel... 10/10! way better than anything i expected!
gui boratto... 6/10. not bad but nothing special.
way out west... 5/10. disappointing.
dj dan... 5/10. kept the vibe going but nothing special.
david guetta... 3/10. he atleast gets a 3 because he started off banging.
steve lawler... 9/10. fucking killed it!
dubfire... 5/10. not bad but a little boring.
