I never really check reviews for movies... if i want to see a movie, ill go see it, even if people tell me its "bad"

I don't go on the forums, but I often read up on the professional reviews they handily collate when I want to think more about possible/other interpretations of a film that has got me thinking. It's a useful site for that.

So you're saying it's better if you see the film first, and then see what everyone else thought?

Yes, I've intentionally watched and enjoyed "bad" movies.

Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic do serve a purpose when it comes to deciding whether I want to spend my money watching something or not. If the reviews are ABYSMAL all across the board, then I will not spend money on it [The Spirit.. I wanted to watch that in theaters so badly, then it turned out to be a flop. Bittorrent status]. If nearly every single reviewer is ranting and raving about how exceptional the movie is, then I will [The Dark Knight simply couldn't be missed on the big screen, and I am glad I spent money to experience it]. Aside from that, if I want to see a movie, I will check it out regardless.

Sometimes, a score of 60% or so isn't necessarily bad, it just means that movie is polarizing. When I see a lot of controversy and many, many conflicting opinions, that makes me want to see it more because the movie is essentially a love it or hate it kind of thing.

Reviews and ratings can be useful.

Um, yes. Why should you read a review first?I find that ridiculous not to mention the spoilers in a review. If I hear a review about a movie, fine, but I wont purposely go read a review before seeing a movie that I ACTUALLY want to see.

I'm not saying it's better per se, it's just how I like to do it. I like thinking/talking about a good film for a few days after I've watched it, so I go on Rotten Tomatoes and read around. Generally I read the reviews that are opposite my opinion- if I liked a film I'll read the "rotten" reviews to see why people disliked it, and if I hated it I'll find out why some people liked it.

Exactly, I usually check what the movie got as a raw score on tomatoes. This score in reality doesn't mean much, but it's usually in the ballpark as to how I feel about the movie. After I see the film, I'll go and look at the professional reviews just to see what others had to say.

That's the whole point, really. To see the movie for yourself and make your own judgement.

Nah a lot of their reviews don't have spoilers, but it's a fairly logical choice to read reviews if you don't wanna blow 20 bucks on a movie date that will suck. If you'd rather go into a movie blind as to how it is, and end up disappointed, that's your loss.

That's not going in blind. That's how movies are supposed to be watched. I don't care what someone else thinks or views the movie. If I come out disappointed then yeah, it happens. It's not a waste.

Very good point. I mean, I see what you guys are saying about watching the movie first without anyone elses opinion, but for a movie that will PROBABLY be bad, why not confirm with the internets first?
