Hello everyone ! I was wondering do you guys/gals spin different genres while you are spinning in front of a crowd?

Have you noticed some of the great big named djs spin lets say, house,tech house,and prog in the same mix. Would this be beneficial to us as djs if we can do this?

more the more DJ's are spinning more and more eclectic sets, just look at the DJ Enferno and DJ AM, with hard drive storage you can store a limitless amount of music in a very small space allowing you to cover tons of genres,
there are some who have CD and vinyl like me who delve into alot of genres like DnB, Dubstep, Electro, Techno, Breaks, Reggea, Hip Hop, Funk, pop, trance, house, and all the sub genres

my advice is not to be close minded, dont scoff at a genre simply beacuse you have heard one bad song from it, keep searching through out the entire genre spectrum

bottom line: it doesn't matter what the genre is, as long as it sounds good to you

I don't really let myself get trapped by genre tags. Just play good music.

So basically, it's ok as long as your set is still rockin to everyone. lol

I've heard some djs say, "Dont play other genres in your set."

To myself I believe, "A good song is a good song." and if it perfectly melds in your set then all the better.

Those DJ's who told you not to play multiple genre's probably said that so your sets won't sound like crap. It's really easy to ruin your flow by switching between genre's that don't go well together. If you want to spin multiple genre's then you'll have to organize yourself really well so you can keep that flow going.

Hah, I've never heard of a dj saying you should only spin one genre per set. That's rather daft.

And I've never heard of a good DJ asking questions like these

To be fair, take his username into account.

No there is no rule that says you shouldn't as long as it works with what you are doing.

But you do have to apply some common sense, you wouldn't for example drop drum and bass or Hip Hop for a trance crowd. In this day and age it wouldn't work, but historically you have had people who have stepped out and experimented. I forget his name now but (Possibly Healey) who would drop smells like teen spirit - nirvana in the middle of his sets and would get booed to high heaven but wouldnt' give a monkeys as he felt it was a good song.

But within the EDM genre you should be looking to have a multitude of weapons in our arsenal and should be looking to build a set based on increase in tempo and momentum. For this you need tracks in different genres to make this happen.

Remember it has to flow, think of it like a massage, smooth strokes increasing in intensity. Dropping a DnB track for example would be like a smack on the booty that comes out of the blue. It would work for some people but most people would be quite upset.
