I guess everyone are gonna say their genre is the hardest.. I think every genre is hard
to produce quality music with the slightest bit of originality.

Hardcore alá Lord of Bass might be the hardest

Its probably down to what ever you are currently listening to. If someone listen to trance for 15 years, trance is probably easyer for them to make than DNB, which they have only listened to for 6 months.

Also, what the guy above said, Orchestra...mostly because nothing you learn in EDM is of any use in Orchestral music.

I think just the opposite - to me, generally speaking, the genres that I have produced are easiest because I've gotten comfortable with them. Orchestral music is obviously more difficult because of the many complexities involved (including understanding how to score for numerous instruments that I can't even play proficiently myself).

But, in the electronica world, I find minimal styles very difficult and I'm always amazed by people who can take very little and turn it into something interesting. There's a very fine line between boring background noise and interesting simplicity there and I sure as hell don't know how to do the latter.

A lot of people joke about how simple rap/hip-hop is, but I've been asked to add some hip-hop flava to a song or two, yo, and it just don't be working fo shizzle. It always ends up sounding like exactly what it is - really bad hip-hop made by a big white dufus.

To me, Rock was hard! But now that I figured out my sound, it's pretty much a piece of cake. Now I'm venturing into trance, and from what I've seen, it's pretty easy! lol

What's hard is ORIGINALITY!!!!

i think i said techno is the hardiest to make and i stand by that statement.
why? because its very clever in the way its made their is lots of programing involved and clever arrangement to.
making parts work in a track that's looping is tricky


i'm not saying other genres are any less difficult to make it's said that trace is the simplest to do witch is kinda true but these days people expect more from trance producers.

i would agree tech is probably hardest just because the layout and the quality of each individual sound is so important, because there's a lot less elements... in trance for example you just slap a million layers together in a horrible cliched formula and hey there you go, number one hits

tech seems to require a bit more focus on unusual sounds and unusual layouts etc... being general of course..

As some people have already said. Orchestral music. Just imagine having to mix and record 40 different people playing the different instruments, and not to mention that they are going to have to play it all together. The mic placement must surely be a pain in the ass.

I find it hard enough to mix (just mix mind you, not even recording it myself) a string section consisting of a viola, a cello, a contra bass and violin. I just can't imagine adding 15 horns and two clarinets to that.

Orchestra Music? I think some dont completely understand the role of a producer. I'd imagine Orchestra music is rather easy to produce, especially since its a tried and proven genre that relies more on the work of others than the producer, especially...The musicians, the composer who writes the actual music, the mixer, the sound engineer that manage mic placements etc. I'd imagine Orchestral production requires more managerial and logistics control skills than actual creative skills. And those managerial and logistics skills after some experience become easier over time. Creating something like Techno / House is harder to Produce, since you dont really follow the same process, and you write and play every part yourself, an Orchestral recording is the work of many people, a Producer is a smaller piece of the puzzle than a Producer is to Electronic Music. Not to mention, this part of the reason why Producers often have a few hits and a lot of misses, if it was easy to Produce, then it would be easy to continuously produce hits, but its not.

Techno / House / Rock / Hip Hop are harder than Orchestra Music to Produce.

Now if we are talking about composition, sure Orchestra is likely harder to compose than most other genres. But even Techno and House producers do quite a bit of composition if there sound is a musical one. And then most do their own sound design and engineering, their own mixing.
