I feel kind of mixed about this one. There's absolutely no doubt that you've picked the cream of the crop in regards to contemporary prog-psy, but the problem is that even the best prop-psy is extremely generic at the moment. Too many tracks right now consist of nothing more the stereotypical bassline, an offbeat high-hat and random 'trancey' or other high-pitched sounds fired off every few seconds but not forming any coherent melody. A lot of them seem not to have any real progression.

While I quite enjoyed this set, I found it a bit bland in this respect. There were no real stand-out melodies or particularly interesting patches that made me sit up and take notice. Conversely, there wasn't a single track I really disliked either. My favourite bit was the track at the 39 minute mark, it had quite a nice groove and a bit more melodic progression. Not knowing a single track in here was a nice bonus.

Mixing and flow were pretty damn good - you managed to hold the mood nicely throughout. There were..two? transitions that I thought were a bit off, but not by enough to really affect my enjoyment. One I can think of was at the 34 minute mark. I assume you did this live on CDJs? If that's the case, I'm really quite impressed with your mixing.

Yeah, I agree with your first point that there is little variation in progpsy. But well it fits in a club as it blast pretty much. Some of the tracks here I think have a coherent melody (Kularis - Timemover, Marco and Cadmium - Intergalactical Paradise e.g.) but yeah, a lot of the progpsy lacks that and here there are also a lot example of that.

To the second point, the idea wasnt to have standout points even though (at least live) it sounded like some of the tracks were achieving that (like Avius - Cheat The System). Don't know if you noticed but around the end there was a track that lowered the energy (on purpose) in order to have it raised again by the next track. The Audiomatrixx track is quite hypnotic, doesnt have so much energy or hard beat or anything but it completely absorbs you, especially on a good system. The next tracks however blow up to the highest peaks. Also, these tracks are mostly made by unknown (still) artists who are actually kicking very nicely.

I know which transitions you are speaking off, but yeah, I was using CDJs even though I had a bit of plan how to start and when I wanted to take off in a different direction (with Halkidiki) I messed the transition a bit. Some of them were rushed and quick too but they actually went quite well, I was surprised! My mixing usually is not very good since I am not a professional DJ at all, so I am very happy by your compliment! Thanks for the review, truly appreciated!

I don't give a fuck who you are, you will never be as good of a DJ as Magadansky. Shut the fuck up with negative criticism until you can at least back it up like Domesticated. Magadansky is an incredibly talented DJ, be a little more respectful.

Well if you read my post above yours you will see that I make it clear I am not a professional dj and I have occasionally the chance to play in small clubs. I am sorry that this style is not your taste of music but, well, Armin won't play something like this!

Thanks for the defense zip but different people, different opinions and tastes, he didnt like it, so be it. Btw I am just tuning your sets so expect feedback from me in your thread soon!

Magadansky,

I think this is a very good set with some nice tracks and your mixing was, for most of the set, done very well. I think the Halkidiki transition that you'd mentioned was the biggest issue, as it was just too long IMO. The changes in direction I like, and occasionally try to employ in my own sets as you may have noticed.

Maybe it's just me, but I think there were too many lulls or "low energy, dead air" spots in the set overall. The energy in tracks like Synesthetic - Down To Earth are nice, but the lulls are hard for me to deal with. Why is it that nearly all trance producers do this...put dead air in the middle of tracks I mean? I'm really digging Motion Drive - Complete Access, nice tune (minus the lulls).

Overall, it's a set worth grabbing and one I'll be keeping. Thanks mate.

Cheers,

THC
