If you want anyone to listen to this you will need to specify what kind of music it is, or post a tracklist.

For crowd noise, you need a microphone at the gig hooked up to a side-chain device and routed into your recording device. Basically, 'side-chaining' works so that when one sound becomes loud, the 'main' sound (your music) is lowered automatically to balance the two. This is how radio shows let their DJs speak over the music without the two sounds clashing with one another.

You wouldn't keep the microphone switched on at all times though, just during the bits where you think some crowd noise would sound good (i.e. never).

Which mixer do you have?

My mixer has a microphone channel too, and it may well employ automatic side-chaining, but I'm not sure.

That's an understatement. That said, I just looked up the manual for my Vestax unit and it doesn't appear to have that function built in.

i fucking loved that bitch. twas my first mixer, built like a tank and i LOOVVEDDD the faders. they're great for long transitions as they have a bit of friction to them which rules. the kill switches were great too. really miss that mixer

What do you mean 'not all of them are shit'? I wouldn't put them in the same range as A&H and brands like that, but Vestax is miles ahead of most popular brands of mixers. Given a cash limit, I would choose a Vestax over Denon, Pioneer, Stanton, Numark and many other brands.

At the moment I have the PCV-275, which I really only use for routing between my sole turntable and a few other pieces of gear because I haven't owned decks for a couple of years.

It's a great mixer enydo. It served me well for quite a few house parties when I used CDJs and is a serviceable bedroom mixer. The faders have great weight and still haven't bled, the EQs cut quite savagely and the kill switches are a lot of fun too. Although the middle channel can't be assigned to the cross-fader, this never bothered me because I've always mixed with the up faders. All the main parts are replaceable if you need it. I highly recommend it.

Nice! I'm so fucking excited about finally getting all my kit together. I've got my tables and monitors, just need the mixer, headphones, and a receiver.

Is this how they do the recordings from live shows, like when Area was at WMC , or pretty much any of the Electric Zoo recorded sets? I hear crowd noise through the whole thing, but the mix still sounds pretty good and clear.
