Is reason a bad program?

I started on reason and had loads of fun and to be honest didnt really know what I was doing. When I made some producer friends they all convinced me reason was a toy and to switch so i got cubase and I do love cubase but i went on my girls computer yesterday and she has reason installed and I thought it was a good program.

now that I know more and can use cubase to master things im thinking of buying reason 4 it seems worth it to me and I love the subtractor.

Any thoughts is the sound quality bad etc like I have heard?

Processing a highly structured and complex pattern of sensory input as a unified percept of "music" is probably one of the most elaborate features of the human brain.....understanding how music is perceived and how it may elicit intense sensations is far from being understood.

It's fine. It all depends on how you use it. Reason has its obvious faults and its obvious advantages. If you're into buying additional software and sounds, Reason is awesome for it. Again, it's all about personal taste. Stop listening to what other people say and go with what makes you feel comfortable. Nobody is going to be able to tell what DAW you used to make a track if you're good at what you're doing. So get comfortable and get to work.

Thanks thats how i feel tbh was just wondering also i remember a comparison that i did maybe someone can explain it to me.

I took a vengeance Kick sample and loaded it into cubase as you would expect large compressed waveform.

I took the same kick and loaded it into redrum which was re-wired to cubase and did a mixdown.

The two waveform were differnt the reason mixdown was a smaller kick and obv quieter. Now i was a newb back then but I know that i didnt change the kick in redrum like turn vol down or anything.

is there some quality loss or was it something I did like maybe a velocity setting in redrum?

yeah i agree with steve on this because making good tracks can be hard work.

#if i see or hear a track made on a different daw witch i like i always think shit man fl sucks.

you can get a pro track out of reason just means you may have to work that bit harder.

Reason is a closed environment....so you cant add software to it....you can however rewire reason to another daw and use it as a plugin.

Reason is a great tool for production. Like all production tools it has strengths and weaknesses. Learn to use it well and it will be an asset to you

Reason is not a weak program at all, if you haven't already DL Trance Addicts Unite 2-4 many tracks on there were made from producers with Reason. EG: OrgaNik, Echano (and subsequently Al Azar), Bren-F just off the top of my head.

I haven't tried it myself but I know it's completely possible to make music with it.

the combinator is one of the the coolest ideas in music production. I wish many other daws would create something similar

I use Reason rewired into Live 7 in combination with Sylenth and Omnisphere. Whilst it is true that the Subtractor, Maelstrom or Thor(even when combined, generally, IMO) cannot hold up to those VSTs in terms of sonic 'weight' (if you want a massive sounding lead) it has more than enough plusses for me to use it in every production:

1 I use Redrum and Rex players rewired for ALL of my drums (I make breaks and trance mainly).

2 I often use it for basslines (Sub is very good for this).

3 The routing possibilities make it brilliant for mangling sounds and fx, and the reverb unit is great.

4 It is VERY CPU friendly and stable.

5 You can get some very nice sounds out of it.

Anyone who says it is a toy is ignorant!

reason is up there with the big boys hands down...if people say "it sounds like shit", they don't know what they're talking about.
Yes, reason is a closed DAW. Is that a downfall, yes very much so.
But a. you can do the same things you just have to find a back road to get there. or b. rewire when needed.
The workflow in reason is flawless, the stability is great, cpu is very minimal. I don't use synths as much as say a "trance" producer so I could see reasons synths being weaker in comparison for sure.
But for the music I produce I'm doing totally fine
check some stuff out if you like:

I've only had limited experience with Reason, but I don't get why anyone would say that it's a "toy". It's actually a pretty cool concept and, as mentioned, has many great features (yeah, the Combinator concept is excellent!).
