Producer and DJ egos: a thought experiment

Say that you are an established producer and DJ who has made releases that have sold thousands of copies. You are regularly invited to do gigs around the world. You have had residencies at clubs. And you own a label that puts out both physical (vinyl) and digital releases.

One day you have a break in your busy schedule, so you decide to check out a message board you have heard about. On there, you find a thread in which a few people are bashing one of your tracks or sets. You think the bashing is unmerited. What do you do?

(a) Ignore it. Who really cares, right?
(b) Explain or argue why you think the basher is wrong, misinformed, or whatever.
(c) Brag about how much money you make and call the basher a loser mp3 kiddie.
(d) Say "ur just jealuouse!11!!1 what have u ever done??!!?"
(e) Other (explain).

I'd go for B if it were unnecessary bashing, but most of the time I'd probably choose A. I don't tend to get caught up on the whole forum drama thing.

(e) I would ask them to be constructive in their criticism (if they arent being already). Criticism is fine, and everyone is entitled to an opinion.

This is like those job application forms

So you want a job at wallmart

Answer these

A difficult customer has a complaint you?

a) Politely deal with there complaint while smiling at all times
b) Flip them off
c) Explain that you dont give a #£$@ and show them the door
d) Expose yourself

your late for your shift do you?

a) Apoligise and offer to catch up whislt explaining the reasons to your supervisor
b) Come in strapped and shoot the place up
c) Urinate on a customer
d) Tell your supervisor you will torch the place if he doesn't shut his godamn mouth

Lol

My answer would be a why would you care if a couple of guys disliked your music half way around the world as long as you were enjoying it.

Processing a highly structured and complex pattern of sensory input as a unified percept of "music" is probably one of the most elaborate features of the human brain.....understanding how music is perceived and how it may elicit intense sensations is far from being understood.

It would depend on the nature of the comments, but either A or B. If it's just juvenile ranting or people expressing their opinion that my music sucks, that's no problem with me. As already stated, people will talk s*#t and they are entitled to their opinions and I respect that. But, if the thread is full of misinformation regarding me or my music, then I'd probably take the time to correct that.

Case in point: a few months ago I posted a song on another forum and someone essentially accused me of borrowing the chord progression from another song (a song which I am very familiar with, having performed it in many bands in my younger days). It wasn't a big deal and one could sorta hear the similarities, but the two songs were clearly using different progressions and in different keys, etc. Well, knowing that other uninformed people were going to see that thread and assume that he was right, even though he clearly wasn't, I replied with a rather lengthy response spelling out the differences in the chord progression, melodies, etc. just to set the record straight. I just don't want to run the risk of having people on a forum that I rarely visit think of me as the guy who steals other people's songs, based on one person's misinformed post.

The answer is

Z) a DJ/Producers response to should be a detailed thread about forum trolls and souless nolifers whose day to day activities seem to revolve around bashing artists, labels, and music. An analysis, psychology and sociology experiment, maybe some philosophy, depending on the artist conducting such a thread.

I'd never expect 'constructive critiscism', only truthful. If you seek constructive feedback, to my mind this compells critics to trad carefully and pull thier punches.

In the end for me what counts are consumption decisions which I would broadly correlate with 100& brutaly honest critiques.

I've been on the end of harsh critics, but it merely made me up my game after feeling momentarily slaughtered

There's always haters everywhere, though they tend to present the lesser percent of, let's say, target audience, so I'd generally go with the rule of not arguing with a retard, since he'll drag you to his level and beat you with experience.
