Smoking ..umm..something evening all

i've been loitering round these parts for some time now, tend not to post much unless its to shoot down the odd person for talking nonsense about the finer arts of production... anyway I digress, thought i'd put my money where my mouth is and show you some tunage

I normally produce the harder side of dance but i've been getting back into trance again in a major way, so i thought i'd pester you lot for a bit of critique.

1st three tunes on the player on www.myspace.com/iainsanderson are probably up your alley, just finished Hysterical realm, the others go back a few months...the rest of the tracks on there are mainly hardhouse/hardtrance

hope you like and looking forward to some harsh feedback!! Can always upload a higher quality mp3 if you need...

I listened to hysterical realm, 11th hour, lift me up.

Soundwise, they're great (though I'm listening on my internet computer) - everything comes through well, you combine your sounds well, the songs have a good groove.

However, the sounds are very "Virus preset"-y. There's nothing memorable or new in the way you're approaching these sounds. The way you're using them sounds very professional, but not new.

For me, this is okay, as long as the music is absolutely beautiful - think the start of Beethoven's 5th symphony beautiful. But that's not the case here, the music sounds like you've only paid attention to composition for a couple of years. The progressions cover safe, familiar territory, the melodies/arps could have come straight out of the mid to late 1990s.

I really wanted to like this, since I love a lot of that mid to late 90s stuff, with memorable hooks.

You've obviously got the engineering side of things down, the songs sound great. But for me, I like to hear new, original artists with new things to say. Work out what makes you different from everybody else and don't be afraid to be different. Maybe you also like Reggae music and can find a way to combine the styles. Whatever. Be comfortable with being different, even if some people go "WTF? lol" initially. (though do listen to see if they have anything worthwhile in their criticisms).

I do like the instances where your frantic 'ctrl-v'ing just turned into 'v's...
