Hi Everyone,

I've recently been using the FL STUDIO 9.0 demo, and I like it a lot. Can anyone offer any opinion about FL Studio who has the whole version, and perhaps provide me a song they made on it. I know I'm asking for a lot here. But I'm trying to pick between Reason 4.0 and FL 9.0. Thanks!!!

also, the quality in FL9 compared to 8 is improved as well.

you should ask this question in the producer studio forum. just saving you some flaming

besides pattern-based production, FL is great. This is especially true if you are a beginner since it's very easy to use. And the piano roll is the best AFAIK. I remember reading on the image-line site that the FL demo is fully functional (except for saving projects) so the demo and the full version probably aren't that different.

Have you tried the Reason demo? Assuming you have, then it really ends up being which one you like best and which one is the easiest for you to work with. If you find that one of them is a litle more time consuming then the other or is a bit harder to use then it probably isn't the best for you.

It might also be a good idea to try demos of other popular DAWs, like Ableton or Cubase. I know that personally, I really liked Ableton after I tried out a lite version that came with a midi controller I bought. Right now my FL is cracked but as soon as I have the means to go legit, I'll be buying Ableton. (and probably use the FL demo just to export midis since abletons piano roll is shit)

What happens if you get a person with many years of experience who uses FL and a person who has just started making music who uses Reason (or vice versa)?

Great songs have been made with both, terrible songs have been made with both. You're really taking a shot in the dark if you ask for demos of songs people have made in each.

Are there even demos available for Cubase? I tried to find one not so long ago with no luck.

I have no idea, I just threw it in there. Can't really look for one right now though, I'm at school and most sites are blocked.

Exactly. Daniel Bedingfield made "gotta get trhough this" on a program called making waves which was £35. Song wasn't exactly great but it sold over a million singles.

I personally like some function of FL but could never get in to it becuase the proper sequencers work so differently and knowing that I think it's just best to start on something that will carry you through.

Nearly everyone I know who started on FL switched to another program as they found it too limited or needed another program with more to offer to be able to grow.

But it can be good to learn on. I do miss the step sequencer a lot.

FL Studio 9 is pretty dope. Big upgrade from version 8. I just made a progressive house tune on it today. Let me jsut state that I used FL Studio since version 3.56 and it was my main DAW for 5 years, I switched to Ableton Live 7 back in February and am now running Live 8.

My main DAW is Ableton Live 8 because it has certain things FL doesnt. Such as I really dont like that in FL Studio u cant copy device chains from one channel to another if needed be (I believe you actually can but its a complicated mess of a process). Also FL Studio's Undo function is usually stricly to FL Studio functions where as Ableton's expands across pretty much anything you can edit, yes this means even on third party plugins. Also the fact you cannot duplicate in FL Studio, you have to copy & paste, and normally when you do, things dont usually end up pasting where you desire them to. These are only a few examples that are huge for me, theres quite a few more like ease of midi mapping, ease of sidechaining, ease of autmation, and others but I will stop there.

For me FL Studio can get messy real quick with all the pattern business, especially since I dont always like to name everything right away and especially if you use blocks AND clips. I only use clips so it eliminates some of the potential mess.

Don't get me wrong its a good DAW, and I love what they did for the clips section of playlist. I'm jsut expressing some areas where I think they could greatly improve.

One thing that FL Studio does have that Ableton doesnt (yet) though is...

AUTOMATION CURVES!

I've had very little experience Reason however I used it for a little while. While I think the synth racks are a cool idea I find them a pain in the ass to actually use, especially to get a simple sidechain on a sound. sheesh

btw heres the progressive house track I said I did. Only external plugin used was Sylenth1.

keep in mind it was only like 2-3 hours of work so far so theres no SFX or major sound fixes or anything just the basic idea so it might sound a little repetitve.
