2009 LovEvolution Parade/Festival Review Thread.

Okay guys so I have not seen a thread for the LovEvolution parade or festival, so I have decided to open it.

I unfortunately did not make it till 4pm, which turns out to be great because when I got there it was pack as hell and could barely move. I can only imagine how pack it was earlier.

So how was the Parade itself? What do you guys think the attendance was and do you think the city will allow for this event to continue in the same location next year??

I have heard reports that they are plans to make it 18+ and charge $20??

I doubt the city would let them make it 18+ and $20. I'd be shocked.

Although the person on bayraves who saw it on the news did say it was SFPD who said it.

But I'm not sure if the "city" would allow it.

And the event would largely lose a lot of its purpose. If parents are worried about their kids, they should make sure they don't go. That's what parents are for.

In the end, if anything, i wouldnt be amazed to see the event moved.

Someone mentioned doing it on Treasure island because they could even use the buildings for stuff...

me and my girl didnt get there till 6 or 630, we were running a day behind and really didnt do much as we wanted too. Bigperf, i still owe him a drink for some reason my iphone was acting up, getting mixed up with other calls and such, thats a first on tmobiles network for me. Anyways, we squeezed until we got to the spundae float and caught eddie do his thing, and then at 730 it was over. Sucked. We didnt plan for the after party since i know it gets all kinds of packed and it gets worse than a can of sardines. But here is what i caught..

Love is in the air along S.F.'s Market Street

People dance and party along the parade route as LovEvolu... Participants in the LovEvolution parade dance their way a... Jeremiah Simpson gets into the spirit as LovEvolution mak... LovEvolution makes its way down Market Street to Civic Ce... More...

(10-03) 17:19 PDT San Francisco -- Thousands of people dressed in neon wigs, sparkly butterfly wings, tutus - or occasionally nothing at all - and danced, hula hooped and hugged their way down San Francisco's Market Street on Saturday for the city's sixth annual celebration of love.

Based on Berlin's Love Parade, San Francisco's LoveFest was renamed this year to LovEvolution to avoid legal action from the promoters of the Love Festival in Los Angeles who had trademarked their name. But potential lawsuits - or the dire economy or the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq - didn't appear to be on anybody's mind.

"It's people coming together, having fun, dancing their asses off and just forgetting the world's troubles for a day," said Sterling Alexander, who danced wearing silver devil horns affixed to his bald head and red, feathery wings.

Also celebrating were several people dressed as hot dogs, a man in a furry pink outfit walking on stilts, a girl giving out free hugs and bare-chested men offering free kisses.

The event shut down Market Street between Second Street and Civic Center and was expected to draw 10,000 revelers. Shoppers and tourists on the busy thoroughfare looked downright perplexed, several stopped to ask what the 20-plus floats blaring electronic music as scantily clad people gyrated on them were all about. The naked man covered in gold body paint and carrying a red bow and arrow proved particularly worthy of double-takes.

Megan Lehrer, 18, and her friends had traveled from Discovery Bay for the event and looked like extras from the movie "Flashdance" in headbands and ripped T-shirts.

"It's cracking - it's fun!" she said. "It's about peace and love."

Love in the Afternoon at City Hall
By SAJID FAROOQ
Updated 9:45 AM PDT, Sun, Oct 4, 2009

Even before the City got a chance to recover from the hoards of leather clad men and women that descend on it last weekend for the Folsom Street Fair, the steps of city hall were turned into a wild dance club.

The San Francisco LovEvolution embraced the City in one giant techno filled hug Saturday. But don't worry, you didn't need to a shot for the love they dished out.

The after-party continued Sunday at the appropriately named bar "The End Up."

The annual dance festival brought out tens of thousands of brightly dressed (though some choose to not dress at all) dance enthusiasts to Civic Center Park to revel in music, food, floats and just plain old love.

The event is in its sixth year and bills itself as the biggest dance music party in the country and it was "born of the original Love Parade event in Berlin." It is sometimes now as the LoveFest and others call it a technoparade after its German influence.

Last year more than 100,000 people turned out to cheer the parade down Market Street and to dance at Civic Center, according to event organizers. Once the 25 floats make it to Civic Center, they are turned into dance clubs on wheels and that is when the real party begins.

The party clearly had adult themes, but was open to people of all ages.

Agreed.

The flip side:

I actually saw quite a few sets of parents who were there along side their teenage kids.

Parents seemed to be having a good time watching their kids have a good time. Quite pleased about that. That is also what parents are for.

in summary: shiz was crackin!

long version: got to sf around noon and took the bart to powell. once i got out of the subway, the parade was in full swing. holy sh!t...the parade route was freakin packed and people on floats dancing - crazy sight - i loved it.

checked into hotel and got down to the festival around 3ish. got to one entrance close to market street and the line was long. but i knew with so many freakin people and the size of the event, there had to be another entrance. low and behold, walked around the block, there was another entrance no one in line, sweet, I was in in about less than one minute.

But once inside, you couldn’t event move, it took about 30 mins just to walk to the other side. It was crazy how packed it was inside. But I am used to crowds and typical edm packed events/festivals, so I didn’t care. everyone was in a good party mood, lots of musically good choices to pick from. My fave was the end up float – music and crowd was bangin. Lots of beer and good tunes, I was set.

Only two negatives – not enough bathrooms and it was wayyyyyyyyyyy crowded, but then again, sometimes a packed place can be fun. so maybe its only one negative.

I have to applaud the organizers, I think they did a great job given the size of the crowd, maybe next year you may just have to expand the festival site, cause that sh!t was hella packed!

Went to the official afterparty, got there after freshing up around 11 or so. musically nothing groundbreaking, but I had a GREAT time. imo, fischerspooooner was terrible. Can someone please tell them to shut the f up. I just want to hear a good set, and not him blabbin on the feakin microphone. Am I the only one who thought this was annoying? Saying over and over DANGERMOUuuuuuuuussee I thought was rude, please call the next artist by their correct name.

Anyways, I tend to like dj’s and sets that take you on some sort of journey – ie like a sasha set or whatever – something that progresses or is cohesive. I thought fischerspooner/deadmau5/groovearmada didn’t do this. It seemed like “ok, here is the next track I am putting on”, no flow, ugh. BUT I have to say, I had a great time at the party, production was good, ease of getting in was good, there was seating, etc…but just not my fave dj sets. (oh no, please let the flaming begin…but this is IMO)

I look forward to going to the festival next year. I already told all my friends that they HAVE to come up for next year’s festival …and I cant wait.

The Solid Gold after-party @ Mezzanine with DJ Heather & LA Riots was off the chain!!! DJ Heather tore it up... real funky, hard, disco, tribal, and deep.

Wow. I would like to start off by saying I had a ton of fun and this was my 2nd time going. There were a TON of people. At first I thought there were fewer because I went straight to the Skills float area, but then I realized I had just arrived 2 hours earlier than I did last year. By about 4pm it was massively packed. I noticed there were more people this year at the stages either side of the Skills stage. The LED screen was a first that I remember and it was AWESOME. I just wish they played some cooler visuals, but beggars can't be choosers. While all in all I had a great time the dynamic was way different this year... here are my thoughts:

Good:
-Better Music
-LED Screen
-More People

Bad:
-Some of the floats were too loud (should be able to listen to music without worrying about permanent hearing damage. I know I can bring plugs, but I and the rest of the 120,000 people shouldn't HAVE to.)
-More hip-hopish horny drunk party crowd
-Less "Plury" people

I am iffy on whether or not I will be attending this again next year. While I had a fabulous time, the crowd has just straight up changed. Maybe it was just because it was so crowded or something, but I felt like everyone was bumping into me like at a rock show and that people were just way less friendly. I felt like it was more about going to a party, drinking, getting fucked up, just seeing what this whole "lovefest" thing is about than it was about going out, having a good time, making friends, and most importantly enjoying EDM and dancing. A big gripe I had with it was that compared to last year I felt like new people couldn't really enjoy the music because 90% of the people there were just walking around looking for a party or something and the other 10% were actually into the music and dancing. I honestly enjoyed Bay to Breakers this year more than I enjoyed the day parade, but hopefully I will feel better about it come this time next year. =]

On the flip side the Afterparty had a great vibe to it as usual. Guess the price scares off the less friendly people.
