There was a professor talking on the radio about it yesterday, and he said this was the reason why it took the Pakistani government so long to attack these groups of fanatics.
According to him (I wish I could remember his name), when India and Pakistan were created, India vowed to become a secular state, whereas Pakistan became an Islamic state. Religion and government don't always get along that well, and they ended up forging these alliances with extremists that turned out to become a real nuisance to them. Pervez Musharraf didn't have the guts to crack down on these guys, but the situation became increasingly difficult to maintain, and that's why there's all this mayhem and chaos in Pakistani soil.
He was optimist about the future of Pakistan, however. I don't know anything about it myself, and just decided to share the little I know to those of you that may be interested
