Soundgarden Reunion Starts The Decade, Washes Away The Rain
January 1, 2010 9:35 p.m. by Ethan Stanislawski

quote:
Most music bloggers were way too drunk to think about work the past few days, but kudos to Alex Young at Consequence of Sound for not only staying relatively sober enough to check Chris Cornell's twitter page, but getting confirmation of the scoop of a Soundgarden reunion.

While we've already encountered comebacks by Alice in Chains and the Jesus Lizard, and will see Pavement shortly, Soundgarden was by far the biggest of any early 90s rock band not named Nirvana or Pearl Jam. They were also one of the best, combining metal and punk better than any band previously had in the mainstream, with three platinum albums, 2 Grammys, and 20 million albums sold wordwide. I'd still list Superunknown, an album that went 5x platinum as one of the better albums of the 90s.

While Chris Cornell released one of last year's biggest flops in Scream, and had already gone somewhat sour with critics with his work with Audioslave and the Casino Royale soundtrack. Nonetheless, Cornell worked wonders with guitarist Kim Thayll, bassist Ben Shepherd, and drummer Matt Cameron for the better part of the 90s, breaking up after 1997's Down On The Upside. Thayll, Shepherd and Cameron have all been relatively quiet since the band's break-up, but the three members played a small show at the Crocodile Cafe in Seattle with former Seattle grunge great Tad on vocals, and briefly appeared with Cornell before a Pear Jam concert in October. Nonetheless, reunion talked slipped under the radar (save for this brilliant Onion spoof) until Cornell launched the decade's biggest early news story.

So far the band already confirmed West Coast tour dates as of yet unannounced, and may very well be headlining Coachella. Welcome back to grunge, folks.

That's cool and I'll probably go, but for whoever you quoted to say that Soundgarden was bigger than Alice in Chains...c'mon.

True. AIC generated much more revenue as a band than Soundgarden ever did.

They weren't bigger, just better. I almost fainted when i heard about this.

A nod to aNYthing - i'm guessing there are only about 5 people on TA who care about it...
