Dunno Why is PVD avoiding LA club gigs?

Anyone have a theory for why PVD stopped playing club dates in Los Angeles for the past 1.5 years or so. He's always spinning in SF or LV or other nearby cities. I assume he must have a beef with one of the LA promoters?

He still comes for the LA massives, but he stopped coming for all club dates. wtf? I thought LA was one of the primo cities for EDM?

Because it's easier for him and gives him 20x exposure to just be bokoed at a massive once a year, or twice sometimes.

It's the same reason you won't see Armin in a club in LA this year.

It's why Tiesto has done long breaks.

Markus didn't play in a club in LA for like a year and a half, too....and it's still be pretty sparingly overall.

It's just how is.

Again, SoCal massives really hurting the (trance) club scene, IMO. Been saying it, will keep saying it.

thanks Dave, you raise some interesting points. I totally agree the massive scene has ruined everything - not the least of which are the actual massives themselves (e.g., house, trance and will i am all on main stage at EDC - no logical progression is even possible). they really need to make those events 18+.

If PVD wants to skip clubs and play massives, then I would expect that PVD would book a slightly larger LA gig such as Palladium (like Ferry just did). He presumably could get primo dollar for that kind of gig. I don't think PVD can sell out a stadium like Tiesto, so a Palladium would maximize his earnings while he continues to build his audience at the massives? I guess I'm just bitchin'.

On a side note, I hope PVD is not trying to capture the massive attendees as fans. They're 100% ignorant about EDM. Not to mention mostly annoying underaged kids. To appeal to the masses, you have to dumb down your music, make it accessible and ramp up the cheese.

they get more money and more advertising, and can still gain plenty of fans! You can't tell me that 40,000 people can watch a DJ and none become a fan. with maybe 300-1000 in a club, those are already fans, what percent of those people will become a fan? And maybe buy the next artist album. With kids who don't follow a dj as close, they will actually buy mix albums and artist albums because they aren't hearing the tracks a hundred times before the release like trance heads and true fans are. They are the ones who go on iTunes and BUY albums or tracks

Dave i'm sorry but i don't agree with you.

The reason we haven't seen any trance DJ's in the club scene this year is because Giant moved to Avalon...and Avalon hasn't really booked any trance DJ's.

Markus did a special event at Avalon 2 weeks ago and i'm sure the same will go for Ferry and Armin this year.

If you look at the bookings of these trance dj's the past few years, they only play at so.cal clubs once a year anyways. (one tour, so this may include an OC, SD, LA trio)

Ferry had his album tour at he palladium in april and armin is playing at EDC, so naturally there club gigs will be pushed back.

I'm 99.9% sure we'll see Armin and Ferry Corsten at a club by the end of the year in So.Cal.

I became a fan of trance after my first massive and was 100% ignorant about EDM at that time.

If even 1% of the attendees at EDC (say ~1,000 of 100,000) become EDM fans as a result of attending the massive that will have a much greater impact on increasing the popularity of EDM than if PvD played one night at a relatively big club like Circus.

Big name hip hop and pop artists perform mostly at huge events. As EDM grows, expect the same from huge EDM artists.

Big in a different way for sure. But whether it is 'bad' is all about your POV.

At EDC this year I will have the opportunity to listen to dozens of big name EDM DJs in a crazy, carnival atmosphere. On Saturday, if I don't like the DJ flow of the main stage there is a solid second stage with excellent trance DJs.

I am talking about the BIG superstar trance DJs. Armin, PvD, Tiesto, and Markus is getting there. Ferry has even been sporatic, doing 18+ or 16+ one-offs at special venues others. Think the Shrine once. last time the palladium. These should not be considered "club" gigs persay. They are special one-offs at a special venue.

And if someone like PvD wanted a club gig in LA, he could get a club gig in LA. PvD hasn't always played at Vanguard, you know. It's been awhile, but I am sure someone could get him in the Mayan one night if he wanted a club gig. His old sets there on all the odds nights were EPIC. If they do a special PvD show or something with him at the palladium or shrine, that is NOT a club gig. Totally different feel. Totally different environment. Completely different crowd.

Do you honestly think that I am just pulling the "DJs don't play at a club for a period of time on purpose" stuff out of my ass?

Avalon is opening up to more trance, BTW. They have SvD on a regular Avaland night in August.

A good portion of the other non-superstart trance DJs could probably be booked easily by Circus...but again, that's not the DJ group I'm talking about. I'm talking about the superstar trance DJs, which are the most important in trying to create any type of buzz in the scene (unfortunately).

not at all man, I can't really speak for PVD and Tiesto but i was just responding to your reason to why armin/ferry haven't played at a 21+ club in la this yr.

in 2008 and 2009, armin and ferry both played at vanguard in the spring..given the whole avalon ordeal..it makes sense that they are a little 'late' for 2010. rest assured, they will play at a 21+ club in so.cal this yr.

He also was at Nocturnal last September. 3 hours of "Twice In A Blue Moon: The Experience"
