You really should be able to control the volume in the software, both for the master and for the headphone out options.
I'm not familiar with the numark unit but it would have to be fuckup of the decade not to have a internal volume control.
hang on, it's got a volume control on the front. Doesn't that work? That's the whole point?

Alas, that volume control is only for the mic in (stupidest thing ever). It does nothing for output volume.
I actually just restarted my computer and tried it again. Adjusting the volume in Ableton works now, but not very well. For the output to be at a level where I can listen comfortably, my master has to be at -24 dB . Numark's control panel doesn't help much either, it only allows you to adjust latency. I'm going to keep looking to see if it has some sort of internal volume control, but so far it seems that's not the case.
EDIT:
I just watched a DJMag video on YouTube, reviewing the Numark DJ IO and it says what I feared, it does not have a headphone output control and that should be controlled by your software. Seems like the mic control would have been better as a headphone control but whatever, at least it works. I suppose I'll just have to remember to readjust my master volume when rendering.

If you're using ableton, you could set the cue out to the headphones on the soundcard and adjust the preview/cue volume while keeping the master output at 0db or whatever level you want it to be at.

Re: Numark DJ IO and Ableton, no way to control volume

So I just bought a Numark DJ IO to use with Ableton, mostly as a replacement for the onboard sound my laptop has. I was looking for something cheap and in the end I was deciding between this and the Maya44 USB, the Maya was more expensive and more then what I needed so I bought the Numark. It's very simple, just a headphone out, a mic in, and two stereo RCA outs (master and monitor).
Now I haven't connected anything to the master out yet (still looking for a certain cable, might have to buy a new one) and the headphone out seems to be working... mostly. I can open Ableton and cue with the headphones or set them as my master, the latency is lower than what I previously had, and it basically works, with the exception that there is no way to control the volume. Adjusting the volume in Ableton does nothing, adjusting the computers volume does nothing, I can mute everything and still hear the sound and it's LOUD.
Anyone know how I might be able to fix this? I've looked it up already but every other forum I've found seems to leave the question unanswered
EDIT:
Might I have to buy a headphone amp? |
Buy a dj mixer!
