It's just something I was wondering at work today ... if you're an in demand remixer, do you just remix whatever artist pays you the most money for your services, or do you go out and offer to some artist to remix a song of theirs you particularly like, or what?
I'm wondering particularly in terms of Tiesto ... the guy has copped some criticism for some mediocre remixes this year, but to be fair to him some of the material he's had to work with is utterly irredeemable SHITE (eg Moby, St Etienne etc). Has he remixed this stuff because he actually likes it or is it a straight up commercial decision?

Well, if you're a non-too-popular remixer, you will probably take any remix given to you cause you need the cash and the reputation to follow making it.
If you are a well known, highly demanded remixer (e.g. Tiesto), you basically turn down 15 remixes everyday, choosing a few of them that you want to remix the most, and psossibly pay (some of the) highest.

Well the remixer doesnt choose the artist to remix, the artist chooses HIM. Before a track is released on vinyl, the producer of a track and a few goons from the label he's signed to will sit down, and decide who they want to remix the track for them. Once they come to a conclusion, they go and contact the remixer and offer the track.

naw its both..either the remixer chooses the person to remix his song or the person who wants to remix it, remixes it. take for example gouryella - ligaya, most likely ferry corsten got in touch with rank 1 and told them to remix it for him. i know that airbase remixed tiesto - urban train? or suburban train (i forget which one) but airbase didnt talk to tiesto about remixing it and he didnt pay for it yet either =X but see it goes both ways

Im guessing that when Airbase remixed the track, he had to build it from scratch. When you're asked to do a remix, and u accept, the producer/label sends you all the samples you need. That's the difference between being asked, or just going ahead and remixing the track.

Sometimes i hate it when a good DJ remixes a shitty commercial tune. Kinda gives you the impression they are selling out

Armin's "Rapture" remix... Did he use software to edit the vocals?

There's some pretty high levels of production tweaking in those vocals no matter which mix you listen to IMO
