Hands down, look at ASUS laptops before going with the others. You will get better CPU's, memory, Hard Drive, Graphics, and Soundcard with their laptops than the others. I use to do my DJ'ing with an ASUS GS-1, which is a gaming rig, and never had an issue with it. Part of the reason I switched is a freind was moving back to Romania and needed a laptop, so I sold it to him cheap to help him out. He told me last month it's still running without a hitch and it's over 3 years old. Look at thier gaming rigs. In fact, it's not well known, but they use to make the first Mac's that came out for Apple. ASUS Gaming laptops are known for being able to out perform most desktops. But there is a sacrafice for that, the battery power sucks.
But, that being said, I sold it and went with a MacBook Pro when the new unibody design came out. I travel 3-4 days a week for work, and like you, I like to have a separate laptop that is away from the net and exclusivly for my music. Other manufacturers are going to be more bulky than Apple's design, and it makes it a hell of a lot easier to tote a 2nd laptop when I have to carry my company issued Dell for work on every trip. I have a Burton Gig Bag, throw my Mac in the computer slot, put my dell in a sleve case inside the main compartment, and still have a ton of room to carry other stuff with me. I know you say you don't like the operating system, but have you really had a chance to use it? I didn't like it at first, now I like it a lot.
