My thoughts, as well as several other TA members', are summarized here.
Timely thread, though, given that the 1.6 update was just released yesterday, which addressed 1 of my 2 biggest beefs with S1. The first is the lack of track folders, which drives me nuts - countless other S1 users have been asking for this feature for months now, but PreSonus doesn't seem to be listening. The other major flaw IMO was the very limited buss routing, which was changed in the 1.6 update to now allow infinite buss routing (with the exception of feedback routing [e.g., routing the signal from buss A to buss B and buss B back to buss A]). This update also improved MIDI input by allowing "all inputs" and making it the default setting when inserting an instrument track.
It's a great and easy to use DAW with many excellent features. And, yeah it comes with a great effects bundle, but the synths/samples are pretty good as well and don't get the respect that they deserve IMO.

I'd say its biggest strength is actually as a sequencing/composing tool. It's sorta like Live from the respect that you can drag/drop instruments, effects, loops, etc. right from a browser. Also, it's got a very intuitive interface, drum sequencer, etc. That said, the built-in mastering environment, which syncs to the mixing environment, is pretty ingenious.
