Dystopia [deep, atmospheric prog and trance]

Runtime: 78 minutes.

Probably not the most groundbreaking mix for people who've been following Mistiquemusic and Panda Recordings, but for others this should be nice. I'm also using this as an end-of-year promo for a magazine, so it's intended to open the more trancecracker-ish readers up to some better stuff. Also, I went out and grabbed some speakers, so the mixing should be back up to my usual standard.

Thanks to my arse-pirate friend Craig for making the excellent artwork. He did it for me about 18 months ago, but I didn't manage to finish the mix that was supposed to go with it.

Making this one was kind of tough. Label and artist wise, it's not very diverse. Like Against the Grain, this could easily have been three hours long, but I want to keep the length a bit more manageable. Thus, I had to cut a slew of very interesting tracks, such as Siberian Son - Biofunk, Bart van Wissen - Cosmic Superhero, Kenny Burke - G.A.C.R., Claes Rosen - Grenadines, R-Tem - Cloud of Sound (Proff Remix) and Subtara's Computer Technology, which is incidentally my favourite track of his. Nonetheless, I'm very happy with this. I hope you will be, too.

Ha. I'm toying with a prog mix I'm half-happy with that has Biofunk on it. Also I found that bit of artwork when I was thinking of making artwork for Post Apocalyptic Transmissions.

Tell me more about the magazine promo thing.

Gonna listen to this today actually. Still have to listen to Against the Grain but I have a feeling I might like this one a little more.

Great minds...?

Yeah, I fully mixed Biofunk in, and two tracks after it. Then I decided I wasn't happy with the flow and went back and changed it all. Great track though - quite unique compared to most contemporary music around that BPM.

The magazine promo is nothing interesting like a CD. I've been writing a column for two years and never shared any of my mixes there, so I decided now would be a good time. It'll just be a soundcloud link.

This went down really well. I'm gonna say that no single track stood out to me from the rest, but instead it was a smooth, consistent ride form start to finish. Mixing was flawless as far as I could tell. Tracks were nicely melodic and weren't too fluffy at all, which is often a problem with this kind of music in 2010. There were nice bass lines and enough of a groove that it helped provide momentum while I was working out. I wish there were a few "special moments" here and there but maybe that's not what you were going for, if that makes any sense. Also, I'm not sure that any of the sounds really brought to mind images of a dystopian world, in fact the opposite if anything. I mean to each to his own, but the music was too colorful for me to feel that way.

Very good overall.

You've certainly been buying some really nice music lately. Enjoyed this a lot. More consistent than against the grain as you mentioned, it was tight, really tight. I think the track around the half hour mark was my highlight of the mix, great tune. Definitely getting more plays from me.

It took me two listens to form a proper opinion, and it's still not an overwhelmingly great one. I enjoyed the set, it was jam packed with beautiful, lush, proggy tunes and the flow and mixing were flawless as usual. However, even after two listens, I couldn't find a single track in there that stood out, or that I liked particularly more than any of the others. It was a nice set, but unfortunately, didn't really impact me that much. Thanks for the music though! I hope your next set is a monster.

Thanks for listening. I listened to Dynomite again today while I was working out. My girlfriend came in and she was like "what the fuck is this crap?"

Thanks for listening guys. Yeah, I kind of agree; there are no particularly stand-out/unique tracks in this mix. However, the overall quality hopefully overrides that issue.
