Chart success never destroys the song, IMO.
It's just that usually crap sells
Seriously, though - some people seem to have some kind of elitist attitude... "if it's popular it must suck".
I don't know why, to be honest - yes, granted, it's usually the cheesy ones that sell but apparently as soon as some tracks hit it big time the artists become "sellouts".
I still think Sandstorm is a decent tune. Not a masterpiece by any means, but listenable nevertheless... I just got sick of it when it got totally overplayed (and coming from Finland, I can honestly say we've had to hear it EVEN MORE than you guys) but maybe I can listen to it again one day and remember the times I heard it for the first time.
Do I have a point?
Err...
I did, but I forgot it... I'm tired.

id have to agree...songs like sandstorm are what got me into trance, but then they get so overplayed you just get sick of them, and they become cheese, and then you get into the really good music and just kinda dont listen to the mainstream stuff a lot when theres so much more out there

Its rare for a good tune to make it into the top ten of the UK charts simply because it is daft little girls who buy the majority of all music sold. This means that Westlife will always be guaranteed a top ten place even though their music sucks. If a tune is catchy, and this normally means irratating, then it will do well. Give them something they can remember after being drunk on their alchopops and something that they can put in their mobile phones and they will love it.
I have always thought some tunes were just crap to start with, all Ian Van Dahl tunes are guff and poor productions with garbage lyrics. Rapture - never liked that tune to start with. PVD Tell me Why - easily his poorest production.
I get bored with tunes if they are overplayed, which makes me dislike them more!
But some tunes do remain unscathed. I still like System F - Out of the Blue and I still love Gouryella - Gouryella and both were fairly succesful commercially.
