A promoter isn't going to plan a big money event if it doesn't think it can't get money in return.
And again, you need the venues of good size (who can hold enough people to make it worth it) to do that stuff. And now there aren't only fewer venues in SF versus LA to do that, but outside of the club venues politics up there right now have made it incredibly difficult to get any non-clubs for special EDM events. Hell, Skills is having to throw etd.POP at the Factory. etd.POP at a club? Tells you how things are in the bay area right now -- difficult!. Markus referenced The Factory in his blog (it used to be called Sound Factory) after NYE saying NYE reminded him when he played there (around 2000). Now, Sound Factory can work as a club and sure it's had a little updating, but if that place wants to go anywhere on a higher scale it needs a rehaul, too. It's lived the last 10 years largely doing hip-hop and stuff.
And then the DJ has to want to do it. DJs (working with their agencies, PR, etc) are going focus on doing this type of stuff selectively. So when it comes to Cali, they are gonna usually pick one city to do the special thing in. And LA will pretty much always win that one because it's just a much bigger market.
This Gareth Emery event might not be to omuch more enhanced from a regular club gig. Or it could be -- maybe he'll have vocalists and stuff that night. I dunno. But if it's going to be a special "concert" event and he has to be selective with cities, it should be no surprised it's happening in LA.
