American and underground - at least from what I could tell. I suspect some of it was produced, there in Atlanta. It was totally stripped of gangsta lyrics and 36 Mafia sensibilities. Just really solid music, nothing ever got loopy, and the lyrics were elevated. Very deep productions, too.
They had a commercial featuring two black guys making fun of Top 40 rap lyrics, talking about how the songs were very superficial with lyrics about things like spinning hub-caps.
