[QUOTEi still have days where i dont think i can do anything right
its all part of the cycle i guess [/QUOTE]
TOTALLY...i've recorded a total of 3 CD mixes and each one is leaps and bounds better then the previous...but at the time, i thot it was the greatest thing. but yea, once u get past the days of on and off beatmatching, you'll level off...or so you think. Then you reach the pt. where beatmatching is second-nature and you just concentrate on the eqs and the actual transitions.... But the odd thing is, u just keep improving, bit by bit...in very unnoticeable ways, but u definitely do. All I can say is cliched, but true...PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE...the more hours you spend behind the decks, the better you'll get.
that's how my skillz are progressing, anyway.
However, i kinda think everyone has their off and on days....when i was recording my last mix, everything but one transition was spot on (beatmatching wise) from start to finish...when i tried to duplicate it to fix levels and wut not, it went to shit. just how it goes i guess...

Every single DJ has these days. But as you improve you do not "blow up" as much when you have these days. This week I was off the boil for a few days, but when I go off now I just struggle to mix with the same smoothness and ease that I normally do. It still sounds good to the untrained ear, DJ's will hear it drifting more than usual.
But the feeling ou get when it returns to being as simple as breathing is superb. That should be enough motivation to keep you going.
I will repeat, practise, practise, practise. Don't overdo it on your off days, I find listening to how much the pros actually suck helps clear my head. Check out some Jules mixing and you feel instantly better, or go and see Dave Pearce live if it is really bad!

Really need some motivation here cuz its really annoying and disheartening when I have these days.. |
I feel ya man! that's just the way it is.
earlier this week, i was throwing down track after track like a badass... felt really good.. but the past few days i've been trying just to get the beatmatching right.. and it made me wonder if i had smoked a bunch of crack or something.
it's alot about focus... you have to have the focus, you have to get in the groove, and you have to feel comfortable... i'm sure there are other factors, but im no shrink.
one thing i like to do, is try a different style of music for a while.. i usually spin hard house/trance, but when i get in that 'cant mix for sh*t' mode, i throw on some breaks or DnB, because i know nothing about it.. and start playing around with it. then when I come back to my usual genre, it all seems easier, boosts my confidence, and sometimes that gets me back in the groove.
if your getting realllly frustrated, take a break for a few days... dont give up, but put it on the side for a while, let your mind come back to it fresh.
or, try to learn a different area.. give up on beatmatching and just concentrate of matching the phrases.. or key matching.. etc etc
peace,
-mer
