I'm planning a second-to-last-minute trip to New York next month, and I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for cheap and not-too-shitty accomodation that is still bookable. An American equivalent to the Premier Inn (http://www.premierinn.com/en/) would do nicely.

Everywhere in nyc is expensive. Fortunately, the exchange rate is definitely in your favor. Where are you going or what are you doing? Need something/where more specific.
You'd probably be better off staying outside of NYC in Northern New Jersey. It'd be a lot cheaper and still very easy and quick to get into the actual city.

Just going for three or four days in the middle of the week, probably the second week of September. Two people. I'd like somewhere in Manhattan, close to all the stuff we'd like to see and do.
I'm just asking in the vague hope someone might have some inside knowledge.

Yeah, you can stay outside Manhattan, but it's a lot of fun just being there and being able to wake up and crash without the extra hour and hassle.
One of my favorite memories of childhood involves waking up to walk to a Deli, Catty Corner from our hotel, and getting fresh bagels with creamed cheese and smoked salmon, for breakfast.
What about looking into apartment rentals? I know they do that shit in tons of places in Europe...wondering if NYC offers the same kind of arrangement.

I like staying with the people I do, in Brooklyn, but the nights I stayed @ the W on Lexington last time were awesome, for that reason.
if u have an iphone download the hotel tonight app, they have resonable daily deals. u should be able to book a nice room for about 100-150/night in midtown or downtown. fuck upper west side.
