Hi everyone,

I was wondering if I could get some advice on where on earth to start with trance music please! I've come to realise that I like trance within half a year or so, so not very long at allll. Like, unbelievable newbie. I know there are so many categories, many of which I can't define or be able to tell apart, such as progressive, uplifting, vocal etc. All I know is that I love trance (though god knows what that seems to be these days apparently lol)

Through casual research and finding links on YouTube, I've found random tunes and DJs. Also seen a lot of names floating around in the world of trance that crop up often.

From also looking on this forum, it seems trance has gone a bit
downhill in recent years; this thread was very interesting:

I've subscribed to podcasts, but I don't know what's great or not! I've looked at links for things called 'trouse' or whatever, and I can hear the difference with some of the trance I listen to.

So yer..I've gathered that trance was maybe better a few years ago,compared to now. I just have no idea who's good or not anymore, and what I should do with my research! I have no problems with how long things take..like I plan to listen to a LOT of older ASOT episodes. I've gleaned that Armin isn't necessarily god-like as some people believe, but perhaps he's a good place to start? There are just so many names I've not heard of.

I don;t like all the Guetta, SHM songs and movement..as some people have said, I think it sounds cheap. Just student club music. I want my 6+ mins AT LEAST of trance please, with the build up and everything. Like I think this is awful from Armin:

I was just wondering if any people could please offer me some adivce on where to start as it feels as if there is just so much to the world of trance, and I feel a bit in the deep end!

If you want my own advice... I would say get some ecstasy and experiment with the older type of Trance songs. Of course you can disregard this, but since you asked for advice I'll say it anyone. My own personal list of favorite songs to listen when rollin' balls:

That's my small list but unfortunately I had discovered recently that my favorite songs were actually the songs that ruined Trance. Seriously. These songs were good but this is what opened the door for what really destroyed Trance and made it shit. So, I dunno.

You could try listening to classic (acid house) Trance.... but I doubt you would like it right now. I highly suggest getting into it, but if you can't find yourself liking classic acid house Trance, then listen to songs from the same era of the songs I posted above. (1997-2002)

I've never listened to classic acid house Trance while on ecstasy or Acid, but, I have to try it someday. And fuck all the haters who say Trance can't be appreciated while on drugs.

Wow what a video... an interesting thing to learn about these guys. I have never seen so much insightful wisdom ever in a video until I have seen this one. Usually, I've only seen interviews of Tiesto being a total douche and vouching about "being musically free." But this interview is golden, I can see the perspective from the top dogs on what they think, feel, and view on the Trance genre itself. Amazing. I am so glad my perspective matches with theirs. It's such a shame. These guys are probably the ones who jump away from the bandwagon when Trance got overexposed.
