Good luck with Amnesia. I had some friends go this past weekend and it was horror stories and a lot of these people were industry folks. Here is a story from one of them. I believe this made its way to the Amnesia front office and they were working on the issues at hand.

We got to the door around 11:30pm, there were roughly 50 people waiting at the door. Everyone was well behaved and there was no drama. The doorman (a tall black guy with a soft voice) was doing the typical South Beach thing and just picking people at random out of the crowd and allowing them entrance. There was a lady holding a clipboard with hand written guest lists for the various promoters. She wouldn't really talk to anyone until the doorman let them beyond the rope, then she would confirm they were on the list and give them a free entry ticket. Quite a few people who were let beyond the rope ultimately ended up finding out there name wasn't on a certain promoter's list and were asked to pay a $50 cover charge. A few of them balked at the idea and were ultimately given free entry tickets. After standing at the door for about 30mins the doorman refused to allow a group of 4 guys with presale tickets into the club, citing "dress code" as the reason. This is when shit hit the fan at the door. These guys started shouting about how the doorman was letting other people in dressed the same as them if not worse and that it was obvious the only reason he wasn't letting them in was because they didn't have girls with them. They said, that would be fine, but that they had already paid $45 and they wanted to be let in. A whole slew of people from inside the club ultimately ended up coming outside to talk to these guys, but they were still never let into the club the entire time we were there. While these guys were complaining about not being allowed entry a whole slew of other people who had presale tickets were not being allowed in as well and tensions were starting to rise at the door. At one point a group of three guys (one old guy, a bald french guy, and someone else) came to the front door and talked to the doorman about how he had to start letting people with tickets into the club. Also another guy ended up coming outside to talk to the doorman and told him "hey, whats going on I have tons of promoters blowing up my phone saying they are at the door and not being allowed in, you need to let the promoters and their guests into the club." After having all these people from inside the club coming out telling him what he should be doing the doorman ultimately ended up looking very stressed out.
Now let me explain exactly how my friend and I were treated. As I said, we showed up at 11:30pm and we got to the front of the crowd and starting waiting at the door to be allowed entry. After standing there quietly for a solid 30mins we asked the lady with the clipboard if we were suppose to tell someone we had presale tickets and she said "no, you just need to wait for the doorman to let you in" (obviously we already kind of knew this, as we saw what was going on around us). After waiting patiently for another 15mins and still not even being acknowledged by the doorman my friend went to the VIP door and talked to someone, who then came over and tried to figure out why we weren't being let in. Ultimately this is when the three other guys came over and had a conversation with the doorman about how he needed to start letting people with tickets into the club. We waited another 10mins and still had not even been acknowledged by the door guy. Finally I told the old guy that we needed to be refunded for our tickets as there was no way we were waiting any longer to get into the club. He tried to convince us to just wait it out, but at this point I felt that we had waited long enough and I asked yet again for our money back. Finally the bald french guy came out with $80 and told us he was "fucking upset" at how the door was being ran, but that he couldn't do anything about it. After getting our $80 back we walked across the street to where Bob Sinclair was filming a promo piece and waited 5mins till he was done. We then walked up to him and introduced ourselves and congratulated him on his new club, to which he was all smiles and thanking us for coming out. Then we dropped the news about how disrespected we were at the front door and that we just got our tickets refunded and we'd never be back to his club again. He really didn't know what to say, but did express how sorry he was and then we just walked away. The whole conversation was being video taped by the guys who had just recorded the promo piece.
Anyhow, it was a pretty shitty experience, but I can't say that I didn't half expect some sort of bullshit like this. They clearly need to get their shit in order, because selling tickets online and then not letting people with those tickets into the club is no way to do business. I mean, what exactly did we do wrong? We paid the $45 online, printed out our tickets, showed up to the club 30mins after they opened, we were dressed appropriately (button down shirts, dress shoes, etc), we didn't complain at the door or anything until after we were clearly not being acknowledged by the doorman. We did everything right, just to still be turned down. Did the club really think we were going to just simply walk away after having already paid $45 a piece? If the doorman felt that we weren't appropriate for the venue he should have simply come over and said "not tonight gentleman, please see so and so for a refund." I'd have had zero problems with that. Also, I don't mean to toot my own horn, but my friend and I aren't exactly some $30K millionaires expecting to be let in for free and given comped drinks. Just last night I dropped $100+ at three different clubs in West Palm Beach in the course of a night out. We routinely go out in WPB and spend hundreds of dollars each time. In fact, I'm on a first name basis with all the places I goto in WPB and never even pay a cover and get comped drinks night after night.. so clearly I spend my fair share of money going out. I would think my friend and I are the exact people any club would WANT to let in, not turn away…. but who am I.
I've been debating whether or not I should even post this to TNL, because I'm sure I'll be interrogated and tried to be made to look like an idiot and be told that there is no way I spend the kind of money I claim to be spending, etc. Honestly, what I typed above is the God's honest truth.
At the end of the day if Amnesia doesn't get their shit together they will have no one to blame but themselves and the guy they have running the door. So stupid, what a waste of time. |
