Been thinking about this since the first time i seen that movie. Wouldn't those dog tags be better with Gooses family rather than the bottom of the ocean? totally!!

but maverick was a selfish asshole. he didnt care about gooses family or maybe what they wanted to do with gooses dogtags...nope fuck em cause mav is having some personal issues right now, so lets fuck over his kid. First he killed his daddy then he threw away anything that could be a reminder of who his dad was. Fuckin hot shot self centered egotistical asshole.

I've re lived that scene tens of times as a kid and as hard as it was for me, I think he did kill him. Maverick's arrogance killed Goose.

The throwing away of the dogtags means Maverick has become a killing machine, and doesn't consider Goose as a human being anymore, therefore it was an act of DE-humanizing Goose.

The spin was induced by the disruption of air flow into the starboard engine. This disruption stalled the engine, which produced enough yaw rate to induce a spin which was unrecoverable. There was no way Maverick could see or avoid the jetwash.

The Board of Inquiry found that he was not at fault in the accident. His record was cleared and restored.

Fuck man, just leave Mav alone and believe in the damn system. He's innocent.

And yea, him throwing the tags into the ocean symbolized letting go and letting Goose rest in peace where he had initially died doing what he loved doing. That shit was deep. His family could go swimming and searching for the tags if it meant that much to them.

Goose died because he was a candy-ass! He was Maverick's weak link. Jesus, you guys take one scene out of context and deduce that Maverick's just acting in his own self-interest but to accept this you have to completely forget about the volleyball scene. Guess who still had their shirt on, ambling about the field looking milquetoast and utterly humiliated by comparison with his peers who are all essentially the embodiment of Nietzsche's supermen. Even his call-sign, Goose, is deliberately ambiguous concerning his gender.

If Maverick and Iceman embody the masculine ideal, Goose (either gander or hen) personifies androgynous impotency. He is hesitant, constantly nagging Maverick to temper his actions, and his position in their relationship is utterly superfluous. Maverick isn't letting go of a cherished friend but honoring his friend's inherent weakness by doing something which should have been done, long ago: sentimental garbage removal.

I agree goose did not fit in at TOP GUN academy. He was a family man with a beauitufl wife and kids. he did not fit in and had no right to be there. But that being said he was the greatest navigator the academy had ever seen. Maverick had a responsibility it was to keep goose alive. And he neglected this vital responsibility because of his need for speed and his wreckless tricks. There was no need for the barrel roll he attempted. It was just like all the times he buzzed the tower, completely unnecessary, was done only to further his name and look cool in front Iceman. He lost a best friend due to it, robbed a family of a father figure and lost the United States of America the greatest navigator in the Academy. What did we gain from this???nothing.
