Commonly referred to as a legend in the trance genre, it is no surprise John O'Callaghan has rocketed to Number 12 in the Tranceaddict Top 250 DJ Poll. Firmly established in the A-list trance elite, John is set to continue his journey further up the ladder of electronic dance superstardom. John's high- energy trance mix coupled with a highly refined precision mixing style has seen him surge up through the DJ ranks. Spinning his first Radio 1 Essential Mix in the summer of 2008, the gifted 28 year old was one of only 4 trance DJs to do so during the year.

Immediately following that he made his debut in DJ Magazine's Top 100 DJs rundown, arriving at No.60. In the 2009 chart he became one of the year's highest climbers, leaping 36 places into the world's top 25 (at number 24) and cemented his place as Ireland's foremost DJ and producer.

In his home country he has picked up the Best DJ awards at the Irish Dance Music Awards for 3 consecutive years; decisively conquered the notoriously competitive testing ground of Ibiza and was the first Irishman to play Trance Energy. John has achieved so much already but this is just the beginning of a trance legacy.

Wow, terrific line-up! Coincidentally both are getting my votes for DJ Mag this year. This one easily over Pure for me

Even though JOC was here a few months back, still glad to see him especially after all the fights that broke out on the dance floor at that empire show. I'll never forget me, my buddy, and that crazy Asian dancer the only ones dancing while 'The Real You' - JVD's mix playing while everyone just stood around and watched security. We didn't give a damn about the other nonsense and were in moment of the tracks JOC was dropping, haha

JOC's set was killer! Absolutely the best set from anyone in this city since Eco @twist a few years back.

Glad you had fun at this gig man. I got to see both JOC and A&F in Ibiza this year. They are some of the very few (in the mainstream anyways) that are keeping trance alive. Love their style and mixing..always on point. Actually got to have a chat with Fila for a couple mins. Super down to earth guy.

We need to see more of these guys come to Western Canada

Totally agree!

Is it me or does it seem real trance has gone back to the underground?? All the big events (not just this city) seem to have mainly house or electro style acts. Heck even Armin is starting to play less vocals nowadays and more uplifting/driving style again. To be honest I couldn't care less about the lack of attention, I prefer it less mainstream.

It was a fun night, although I kinda predicted almost every track Fila playing, almost the exact replica set from the Dream show in Miami I attended during WMC and the amount of drugs going around was crazy. Makes you wonder...and also the real reason these kids go to these shows for, I can only imagine how Pure is going to be

No its not just you lol. Past 2 years or so mainstream cheesy stuff has taken over. Looking at any lineups in EDM/CAL and you'll see that as well. It sucks but like you said couldn't care less either about the lack of attention either. The only crap side to it is that you get less quality acts/DJs coming out here and more cheesy electro/dubstep/trouse or whatever acts coming instead. And what really sucks is that the mainstream public here loves it and the promotors are milking it. Sucks when you post asking for John Digweed (to promotors), no one even knows who youre talking about, but when someone puts Dash Berlin or Afrojack everyone goes nuts.

I'm curious about your comment about the drugs going around, was everyone just high out of their minds and couldn't handle it or what? LOL

Yeah I rarely attend any shows here anymore. Makes more sense just to save up and travel to other cities/countries and attend the shows there. Like you said, no one listens, no real talent come around plus I really don't like the scene here at all. Its not just the big events, club shows are just as bad.

As for the drugs, there was an abundence of it at this show. Don't think I've ever seen this much ever. Guys were doing lines on the floor, pot everywhere, and large amounts of people poppin. It never gets to to me but gets a bit irritating when someone asks "are you sellin" or "cover me bro" or when security comes around to grab the users while you're dancing. To be honest I think most people that attended were here to get f'd up. They obviously didn't know the music and just treat like another 'dance music=drug party' show. 10%, likely less actually were familiar with the tracks/genre...

I didn't think it was THAT bad! Holy shit that sucks. As for the drugs lol, that must be why the city wanted/wants to shut down the all night events, if everyone going is thinking drug party haha.

Yeah same for me, the main reason I never go to shows there either, music & scene there sucks. The only place in Canada where you'll really find a good edm scene is Montreal, and Toronto somewhat. It's really too bad theres only Boodang or UnionElectronic as promotions out west. All they bring is the mainstream stuff.. At least 3 years ago Frequency looked like: Paul van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, Marco V. At the time that was a solid trance lineup and good music, good crowd. The past 2 years with the growth in popularity of EDM worldwide (and parallel growth in EDM/Cal) the lineups there get more and more cheesy/mainstream electro, and from what you said I guess the crowd as well aren't going for the music either but just to get high or party which overall is too bad.

The only 2 shows I went to this year were Paul van Dyk which was cut off early because some fight/overdose/bullshit in the bathroom and wrecked what was otherwise an awesome night (music wise), the venue felt only half full at times, and Ferry Corsten (although music was average I've always had a sweet spot for Ferry, and my girlfriend wanted to go really bad) it was a really good night tbh, but more than half the crowd were there like it was another regular bar night. Everyone I talked to that night as well about music like John Digweed, Joris Voorn, Sven Vath had no idea who they were, or one person I think mentioned it was undanceable music.

Since I cant go back to Montreal this christmas/new years I have my fingers crossed for something good in Edmonton/Calgary but my hopes arent high lol.

You said it...those are the only two cities I will attend any CDN shows from now on! A lot of my family are out there. My cousin just came back from there and said he is done with clubbing/events in the west coast too, haha.

Saving up for Luminosity March shows(maybe a asot600 show in Europe too) and the Luminosity summer shows as well!

Luminosity and Grotesque have always good trance shows in the Netherlands. Luminosity is probably the most popular in terms of trance. Grotesque too though should take note of, their next show in Rotterdam lineup: Adam Seller, Alex M.O.R.P.H., Andy Moor, Arctic Moon, Artento Divini, Brothers in the Booth, Cor Fijneman, Jay Junior, John O'Callaghan, Juventa, Leon Bolier, Luciλn Foort, Mark Sixma, Menno de Jong, Ψrjan Nilsen, RAM, Richard Durand, Santito, Sied van Riel, Spider, Undercover Dj's, Wendel Kos, Giuseppe Ottaviani.
Quest4trance is also decent. But yeah all 3 promotions only do events a few times a year so make sure you're in the Netherlands when they do plan one.
I dunno though if you're gonna go to any events there I'd go with Awakenings. Best techno promotor and best production by far, always crazy lineups as well.

At least this month theres one night with Markus Schulz/Arnej, but even that is just meh. Plus Flames Central so its impossible to move because its usually so packed all the time.
